Stomach issues can be debilitating and can even cause further issues for your bowel movements and eating habits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is all pain is real and should be evaluated,\u201d Nathoo said.<\/p>\n<p>But the type of pain you\u2019re feeling should dictate your next steps, as some symptoms are more serious than others \u2015 specifically if you have sudden, new pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people experience severe and acute onset pain, they should go to the ER. The concern would be that the pain could be due to a cause that requires emergent intervention,\u201d Nathoo explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Certain symptoms that can accompany stomach pain should also be addressed as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s a new symptom, then we always say you should probably consult with somebody,\u201d Sarker said. This is especially true if certain GI \u201calarm factors,\u201d which Sarker says are new abdominal pain, bleeding from the bowels and weight loss, coincide with the pain.<\/p>\n<p>While a one-off stomach ache can happen, if you have mild, chronic stomach pain, you should see a doctor if the pain is non-debilitating and continues for more than a week or two, Nathoo said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to take any pain or symptoms seriously if you have a family history of stomach cancer, esophageal cancer or colon cancer, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.hopkinsmedicine.org\/provider\/ekta-gupta\/2703764\" target=\"_blank\" data-skimlinks-tracking=\"7767935\" data-affiliate=\"true\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Ekta Gupta<\/a>, a gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore.<\/p>\n<p>Colorectal cancer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/colon-cancer-young-people-symptoms_l_63fcc67de4b0735bf879341f\" target=\"_blank\" data-skimlinks-tracking=\"7767935\" rel=\"noopener\">is becoming more and more<\/a>\u00a0common in young people, according to a recent American Cancer Society report.
