But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), not all produce is created equal.<\/p>\n<p>The health agency has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2014\/13_0390.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:research-backed list;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">research-backed list<\/a> of the top 41 powerhouse fruits and vegetables, breaking down the best of the best. But, given that something has to land at the bottom, there is a vegetable that didn\u2019t make the top tier\u2014so consider it the worst of the best.<\/p>\n<p>So, which is the least healthy vegetable of all the powerhouse veggies, and is it still okay to eat it? Again, this doesn\u2019t mean that sweet potatoes are bad for you\u2014they\u2019re just not considered as nutritious as the other powerhouse vegetables.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What makes sweet potatoes unhealthy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sweet potatoes aren\u2019t unhealthy, per se. They\u2019re still vegetables, after all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a dietitian, it&#8217;s important to me that we focus more on the big picture when it comes to vegetables,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicacordingnutrition.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jessica Cording, MS, RD;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Jessica Cording, MS, RD<\/a>, author <em>of The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress &amp; Anxiety. <\/em>\u201cThe majority of Americans aren&#8217;t eating enough vegetables in the first place, so it&#8217;s more important, from my perspective, to encourage people to just eat the damn vegetables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweet potatoes are even sometimes labeled as a &#8220;superfood&#8221; due to their high vitamin A and fiber content, says Scott Keatley, RD, co-owner <a href=\"https:\/\/keatleymnt.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy<\/a>. \u201cHowever, they\u2019re not perfect,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest downside is that sweet potatoes are starchy, Cording says. \u201cThey are more carbohydrate-dense than, say, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a62047125\/vegetables-for-weight-loss\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:green vegetables or cruciferous veggies;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">green vegetables or cruciferous veggies<\/a>,\u201d Cording explains. \u201cThat&#8217;s not an inherently bad thing, but starchy vegetables like sweet potato are best consumed in the context of a meal or snack that provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a62601233\/high-protein-meal-prep-manual-pdf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:protein;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">protein<\/a> and or fat to help support stable blood sugar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keatley also notes that this veggie has a relatively high glycemic index compared to others, \u201cmeaning they can cause a quicker rise in blood sugar levels.\u201d This can be a concern for people managing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a62055882\/diabetes-medication-dementia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:diabetes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">diabetes<\/a> or blood sugar sensitivity, \u201cespecially if they\u2019re eating large portions or pairing sweet potatoes with other high-glycemic foods,\u201d Keatley adds.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are any other vegetables unhealthy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Technically, all vegetables are considered healthy. But the vegetables positioned right above sweet potatoes on the powerhouse scale include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"caas-list caas-list-bullet\">\n<li>\n<p>Leeks<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Turnips<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Rutabaga<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Winter squash<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Can I still eat sweet potatoes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For sure. Cording says she\u2019s seen clients try to avoid certain vegetables because they read or heard that they\u2019re not as healthy as others\u2014but all vegetables have some benefit, including sweet potatoes. \u201cSweet potatoes provide fiber, potassium, and antioxidants like vitamin A, vitamin C, and beta-carotene,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Keatley stresses that sweet potatoes \u201cabsolutely\u201d have a place in a balanced diet for most people.
