{"id":120088,"date":"2024-10-30T14:26:45","date_gmt":"2024-10-30T07:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=120088"},"modified":"2024-10-30T14:26:45","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T07:26:45","slug":"uk-engineers-aggressive-tumor-shrinks-by-50-in-just-6-weeks-after-first-of-its-kind-experimental-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=120088","title":{"rendered":"UK engineer&#8217;s &#8216;aggressive&#8217; tumor shrinks by 50% in just 6 weeks after first-of-its-kind experimental trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A UK man\u2019s \u201caggressive\u201d brain tumor was cut down in size by \u201c50%\u201d following a first-of-its-kind treatment for a type of cancer that typically kills patients within 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>The experimental trial was tested on Paul Read, a 62-year-old engineer who was diagnosed with glioblastoma \u2013 a cancer that kills most patients within a year and a half \u2013 back in December 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To kick off the experimental treatment taking place at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), doctors had surgeons remove as much of his tumor as they could and then implanted a tiny device called an Ommaya reservoir right under his scalp, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cg4lzg53wlyo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to BBC.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Paul is the first patient recruited for a new brain cancer trial. <span class=\"credit\">Marie Mangan via UCLH<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the device was placed, doctors would inject low levels of radioactivity directly into the tumor once a week for six weeks. This process was aimed at killing cancer cells while leaving the healthy tissue unharmed.<\/p>\n<p>The findings from the trial were released on Tuesday and had stunning results.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Brain scans revealed Read\u2019s tumor \u201creduced in size by 50%\u201d at the end of his six-week treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just gone through [Paul\u2019s] scan results with him and his end of treatment scan shows a reduction in the tumor, which is really quite remarkable for somebody whose tumor is so aggressive,\u201d said Dr. Paul Mulholland, the UCLH consultant medical oncologist and chief investigator who designed the trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis trial was a lifeline, as the likelihood of survival, according to the data, was a year or less for me,\u201d Read said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclh.nhs.uk\/news\/first-patient-takes-part-new-phase-1-clinical-trial-patients-recurrent-glioblastoma\">in a statement from UCLH.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>No side effects have been reported by Read besides just feeling \u201ca little more tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Paul Read\u2019s brian tumor dropped 50% in size over the course of just six weeks. <span class=\"credit\">Marie Mangan via UCLH<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Paul is a field service engineer in the print industry living with his wife in a town just north of London. <span class=\"credit\">Marie Mangan via UCLH<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the early days, Read\u2019s symptoms started with a headache during a work trip to South Korea and the pain continued when he arrived back in his small town just north of London. Two weeks later his face dropped to one side and he was diagnosed with glioblastoma. <\/p>\n<p>Quickly after this, his doctors tried to remove as much of the tumor as possible and then he underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy but the treatment didn\u2019t hold up because the tumor was growing again in July.<\/p>\n<p>The CITADEL-123 trial at UCLH was offered to Read and he \u201cwas happy to explore anything\u201d that would treat his condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all dealt a hand of cards and you don\u2019t know which ones you are going to get,\u201d Read added.<\/p>\n<p>Before he saw the remarkable results, he said \u201cit will be wonderful if this treatment helps me and if it doesn\u2019t, it doesn\u2019t\u2026 it may benefit someone else down the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The medical team has started a second patient on the same procedure and they plan to eventually have up to 40 patients treated in phase 1 of the trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very pleased that this clinical trial is now open.
