You can follow Newton on Twitter at @DNewtonespn.<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>CHARLOTTE, N.C. &#8212; Quarterback <a data-player-guid=\"975cc6da-01e5-3dcc-8a1a-1c9ecdb27d58\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4685720\/bryce-young\">Bryce Young<\/a> will make a second straight start for the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"647c27bf-ab86-550e-5b83-91c29e73e4a9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/car\/carolina-panthers\">Carolina Panthers<\/a> on Sunday against the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"97d2f6c9-2f22-459c-306a-046941ccab2a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/no\/new-orleans-saints\">New Orleans Saints<\/a>, and rookie running back <a data-player-guid=\"c349695b-9c76-39bf-878f-699e76ba2131\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4678008\/jonathon-brooks\">Jonathon Brooks<\/a> could make his NFL debut.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks spent the first eight games rehabbing from ACL surgery in November, when he was at the University of Texas. The second-round pick would share the backfield with <a data-player-guid=\"7c6b0551-49b5-aa13-9e26-7db2f9dad46f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4241416\/chuba-hubbard\">Chuba Hubbard<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"c9d42ca5-0120-49e1-7889-de762f2a665f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4045163\/miles-sanders\">Miles Sanders<\/a> if activated to the 53-man roster.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline editorial float-r\" data-behavior=\"article_related\">\n<h2 class=\"editorial-title\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/h2>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Young will start as veteran <a data-player-guid=\"10080fc5-c043-a458-e54d-428c18555089\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/14012\/andy-dalton\">Andy Dalton<\/a> continues to rehab from a sprained thumb on his throwing hand, which he suffered last week in a car accident. Dalton was a full participant in practice Wednesday and is expected to be Young&#8217;s backup.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To me, it was taking the decision out of Andy&#8217;s hands,&#8221; coach Dave Canales said. &#8220;If you were to ask Andy, &#8216;Could you go?&#8217; He&#8217;d say yes. And, for me, he&#8217;s like a week removed from a thumb injury and I just want to make sure that we&#8217;re putting him back out there in the right state and the right framework.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I&#8217;m excited for Bryce to have another opportunity to build on things that we&#8217;ve talked about. To continue to just grow and get that experience that we talked about is invaluable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This will be Young&#8217;s second start against the Saints. He completed 13 of 30 pass attempts for 161 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in a 47-10 loss in New Orleans in Week 1.<\/p>\n<p>He was replaced by Dalton after an 0-2 start, and he didn&#8217;t get another start until Sunday at <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"51042145-e3c1-0694-ae0d-f720342ff8fc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/den\/denver-broncos\">Denver<\/a>. He completed 24 of 37 pass attempts for 224 yards with two touchdowns and had two interceptions in the 28-14 loss.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks won&#8217;t start, but he&#8217;ll get some reps behind Hubbard if he&#8217;s ready.<\/p>\n<p>While there was speculation before the season that Brooks ultimately would make Hubbard expendable when he becomes a free agent after the season, the team appears committed to re-signing Hubbard to a long-term deal and keeping both backs moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Canales said he wants to look at Brooks for a full week before committing to playing him on Sunday, but the window is set to end next Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thinking about him and making sure that he&#8217;s confident and ready to go,&#8221; Canales said. &#8220;So we&#8217;re going to stack up a few more days here before we make that decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Canales said he won&#8217;t make a decision on who will start at quarterback after Sunday until next week. Young said he&#8217;s looking at his situation week to week, but he&#8217;s grateful for a second chance to face New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday was the first day this season that the Panthers practiced without wide receiver <a data-player-guid=\"0840444a-2bd0-5deb-66f0-91e20a1c88b2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/3932905\/diontae-johnson\">Diontae Johnson<\/a>, who was traded to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"38248455-3da4-84e4-8090-98b5cc38ffdc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/bal\/baltimore-ravens\">Baltimore Ravens<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just the drive he has, the wiliness to compete,&#8221; Young said of Johnson. &#8220;He is someone who always wanted to be his best throughout training camp or games. He was always giving his all. I have nothing but love for him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A league source said the Panthers began exploring the idea of trading Johnson weeks ago.
