That\u2019s huge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. David T. Felson, an arthritis expert and professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, said the study \u201cchanges the landscape,\u201d adding that the pain reduction is greater than anything that can be achieved short of knee replacement surgery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/media\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2403664\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">results<\/a> were published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Knee osteoarthritis affects nearly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/knee-arthritis-americans-has-doubled-1940\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one in five<\/a> Americans over the age of 45. Those with obesity are especially likely to develop it because their weight puts more stress on the knee and because obesity is associated with inflammation, which contributes to deterioration of cartilage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There are no good medical treatments. Doctors can suggest patients take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
