supreme court judges have submitted their resignations after controversial judicial reforms, the top court has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In a move that has sparked diplomatic tensions and opposition street protests, Mexico is set to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/sep\/11\/mexico-senate-approve-changes-judiciary\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the world\u2019s only country to allow voters to choose all judges<\/a>, at every level, starting next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The eight justices \u2013 including president Norma Pina \u2013 declined to stand for election in June 2025, a statement said, adding that one of the resignations would take effect in November and the rest next August.<\/p>\n<figure href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jun\/03\/claudia-sheinbaum-president-mexico-party-supermajority\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">President Claudia Sheinbaum<\/a>, however, has said that the court lacks the authority to reverse a constitutional reform approved by congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cEight people intend to change a reform about the people of Mexico \u2026 Do they realise the magnitude?\u201d she told a news conference on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">A day earlier Sheinbaum suggested the judges\u2019 real motive was to protect their retirement benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cIf they resign now, they will leave with all their retirement benefits,\u201d Sheinbaum said. \u201cIf they do not resign now, they will no longer have their retirement benefits \u2026 which is a lot of money,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/sep\/30\/mexico-andres-manuel-lopez-obrador\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Former president Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador<\/a>, who enacted the reforms in September before leaving office, argued the changes were needed to clean up a \u201crotten\u201d judiciary serving the interests of the political and economic elite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Critics fear that elected judges could be swayed by politics and vulnerable to pressure from powerful drug cartels that regularly use bribery and intimidation to influence officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">During his six years in office, L\u00f3pez Obrador often criticised the supreme court, which impeded some of his policies in areas such as energy and security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Sheinbaum, a close ally of L\u00f3pez Obrador who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jun\/02\/mexico-first-female-president\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">became Mexico\u2019s first female president<\/a> on 1 October, strongly supported the judicial reforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The changes sparked diplomatic friction with key economic partners the United States and Canada, upset financial markets and prompted a series of protests by judicial workers and other opponents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Washington warned that the reforms threaten a relationship that relies on investor confidence in the Mexican legal framework.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async
