She received a kidney transplant in July 2023, after being on the transplant wait list for four years. Today, a year and a half after the transplant, Evans says she feels great, and her kidney is working \u201cperfectly fine,\u201d with \u201cno signs of rejection.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq0007356mxxvu51zy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But her journey to a transplant wasn\u2019t easy. Evans told CNN that she was placed on the kidney transplant list in 2019 \u2014 four years later than she should have been \u2013 because her race was used in clinical equations to assess the health of her kidneys.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq0008356m7298x2qj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI should have been placed on the transplant list in 2015 because there is no scientific reason why my race as an African American should\u2019ve been a factor in how well my kidneys function,\u201d Evans said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq0009356mabn1qi2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The equation used to assess Evans\u2019<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>kidneys routinely overestimates the kidney function of Black Americans, delaying Evans\u2019<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>treatment.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The equation\u2019s overreliance on race is inaccurate and dangerous but unfortunately still common,\u00a0according to a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine that was published Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000a356m9co6hzog@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report found that race and ethnicity in biomedical research are used \u201csometimes in harmful ways.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000b356m62kuowv7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clinical equations are used by health-care professionals to help make decisions in patient care and treatment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000c356mhzmjsj0m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Race and ethnicity are used to categorize Americans often, but according to the report, these categories can be misused in scientific analyses. The report adds that this characterization contributes to the \u201cpersistent misconception\u201d that humans can be biologically divided based on their race, an idea known as \u201crace science.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000d356mjsbmi97s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Race can influence diseases in individuals because it acts as a social determinant of health, not a biological one. The report critiques the overuse of race in algorithms, treating it as a proxy for other variables, such as socioeconomic status or discrimination.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000e356m0jqrpj2g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRace is a very strong predictor for certain diseases,\u201d Dr. M. Roy Wilson, an ophthalmologist who co-authored the report, told CNN. \u201cWe just think that it\u2019s overused and relied on too much, without looking at what some of the underlying reasons might be for the disease.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000f356mnbd2ywwc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report included other examples of how race has been improperly seen as a driver of disease, like sickle cell disease among Black individuals. The high propensity is believed to be due to geographic distribution or ancestry, rather than race.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000g356mh1rz4qw8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The\u00a0use of race as a factor for determining health, and subsequent treatment plans, can come from \u201coutdated assumptions about race\u201d \u2014 the same assumptions that affected Evans\u2019<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>treatment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000h356mate3f3e0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no question that many other clinical algorithms have basis in racist thinking, or in outright racism,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIt\u2019s also no question that some of these clinical algorithms that are race-based have been harmful.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000i356mw5mnm18r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some researchers propose that increasing diversity in the fields that create these models can help reduce bias in algorithms. Others also propose \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/18\/politics\/ai-chatgpt-racist-what-matters\/index.html\">cross-functional expertise<\/a>\u201d when creating these algorithms, CNN previously reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000j356mpatn1tau@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To combat inaccurate AI assumptions, the report stated, health professionals must use \u201ccareful deliberation\u201d before deciding whether to include race in their calculations. Including race in algorithms when it is \u201cappropriate and scientifically justified\u201d will depend on the research and its goals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000k356meedenv1q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wilson said that this assessment and justification should be done \u201cthroughout the different stages of the research process.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000l356mnr15icnq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report also recommended that researchers partner with \u201crelevant communities\u201d to include authentic and expansive experiences of race and ethnic groups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2wdi5eq000m356m8wcqosnj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Evans,\u00a0who was not involved with the new report, is now an advocate for racial equity in health care.
