Tyler is a <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/29812-kendrick-lamar\/\">Kendrick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/2173-jay-z\/\">Jay-Z<\/a> fan\u2014performing at this summer\u2019s Ken and Friends Juneteenth show and rapping over a <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/jay-z-444\/\"><em>4:44<\/em><\/a> instrumental in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xxhUCXWmA2k\">2017<\/a>\u2014so he was bound to rap about white supremacy someday. Surprisingly, the man who once declared that he wrote music for \u201cwhite kids with nigger friends who say the n-word\u201d nails it on \u201cI Killed You.\u201d The song starts off as an interpolation of the children\u2019s ditty \u201cWheels on the Bus\u201d but morphs into an interrogation of Western beauty. Drums that sound like a djembe and intermittent horns wouldn\u2019t be out of place in a New Orleans street parade. Tyler, flute in hand like the Pied Piper, urges Black people to embrace their kinks, dark skin, and other features that the world tries to stamp out: \u201cYou the room, baby, they the motherfucking elephant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Black women rappers seem to remind Tyler there\u2019s more to making music at 33 than uber-serious lyrics. \u201cGive a fuck \u2019bout pronouns, I\u2019m that nigga and that bitch,\u201d he raps on album standout \u201cSticky,\u201d featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/glorilla\/\">GloRilla<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/sexyy-red\/\">Sexyy Red<\/a>. The beat is simple; it sounds like he hired a live step team to record background vocals. You can tell he\u2019s just elated to be with the girlies and the refrain is destined to cling to your hippocampus. Tyler is an amazing rapper when he wants to be, even on cartoony beats like \u201cBalloon\u201d and \u201cThought I Was Dead.\u201d Just like \u201cSTUNTMAN\u201d on <em>The Estate Sale,<\/em> \u201cRah Tah Tah\u201d channels the West Coast and Southern rap sound Tyler grew up on. \u201cI\u2019m a bona fide face seat, box muncher,\u201d he says, making Munch sound like a position of authority.<\/p>\n<p>For all of <em>CHROMAKOPIA<\/em>\u2019s hitting-your-thirties ego death confessionals, it\u2019s the braggadocious, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/20493-cherry-bomb\/\">Cherry Bomb<\/a><\/em>-sounding tracks that really hit: \u201cThought I Was Dead,\u201d \u201cRah Tah Tah,\u201d \u201cNOID,\u201d and \u201cSticky.\u201d His rejection of the past is understandable. \u201cThat version of T that you knew was a memory,\u201d he says on \u201cTomorrow,\u201d anticipating the critiques: \u201cWho is that? You niggas get too attached to hear the theory.\u201d Not too long ago, entire nations and commonwealths were <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/musicblog\/2015\/sep\/01\/tyler-the-creator-comments-banned-uk-freedom-of-speech\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/musicblog\/2015\/sep\/01\/tyler-the-creator-comments-banned-uk-freedom-of-speech&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/musicblog\/2015\/sep\/01\/tyler-the-creator-comments-banned-uk-freedom-of-speech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terrified<\/a> of Tyler because of his controversial lyrics. Then he started philosophizing and crooning about love and became a bit more brand-friendly. Few are as quick-witted in their raps as him, though.
