We\u2019re <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/11\/well\/move\/sitting-is-bad-for-our-health-should-we-squat-more-instead.html\" title=\"\">not evolved to do it<\/a>, it <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/10\/well\/move\/sitting-for-more-than-13-hours-a-day-may-sabotage-the-benefits-of-exercise.html\" title=\"\">can undermine our<\/a> exercise gains, it causes <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/04\/well\/move\/dead-butt-syndrome-gluteal-amnesia.html\" title=\"\">dead butt syndrome<\/a>. Sitting might not quite be \u201cthe <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/science\/sciencenow\/la-sci-sn-get-up-20140731-story.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">new smoking<\/a>,\u201d but too much of it can still shorten your life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSitting is actually aging you faster,\u201d said Katy Bowman, a biomechanist and author of \u201cMy Perfect Movement Plan.\u201d Whether it\u2019s bone or joint health, muscle mass or energy level, she added, \u201ca lot of what you perceive as aging is going to be heavily <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/news\/too-much-sitting-too-little-exercise-may-accelerate-biological-aging\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">influenced by your sitting time<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And we spend a lot of time sitting. Numbers vary around how much average Americans sit per day, but it may be as long as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8595506\/#TFN1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">nine and a half hours<\/a>. Studies suggest women sit less than men do, but most agree we all sit more than previous generations did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The consequences can be serious.
