They were all men in suits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Chanel\u2019s second female global CEO Leena Nair, who has worked to increase gender diversity in the workplace, recently learned that OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT had a much different idea about the demographic makeup of the legacy luxury brand.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Nair and her team visited Microsoft\u2019s Seattle headquarters and spent time experimenting with ChatGPT, Nair said in a recent Stanford Graduate School of Business \u201cView from the Top\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UIJUgnykkOA\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UIJUgnykkOA\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re like, \u2018Show us a picture of a senior leadership team from Chanel visiting Microsoft\u2019\u2014it is all men in suits,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Nair\u2019s Silicon Valley trip also included a visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a> and other tech firms\u2014part of Chanel\u2019s push into AI investment, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmeticsbusiness.com\/chanel-invests-in-ai-with-first-ever-try-on-beauty-app--174709\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/cosmeticsbusiness.com\/chanel-invests-in-ai-with-first-ever-try-on-beauty-app--174709\" rel=\"noopener\">Lipscanner<\/a>, an AI-powered app allowing users to virtually try on lipstick, which it introduced in 2021. But she said the image ChatGPT created to depict her team failed to account for Chanel\u2019s employee makeup of 76% women\u2014including the company\u2019s own chief executive. She added that 96% of the brand\u2019s clientele is also women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a 100% male team, not even in fashionable clothes,\u201d she said. \u201cLike, come on. This is what you\u2019ve got to offer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An OpenAI spokesperson told <em>Fortune<\/em> that bias continues to be a significant issue in artificial intelligence  the industry is addressing. \u201cWe are continuously iterating on our models to reduce bias and mitigate harmful outputs,\u201d the spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fortune <\/em>asked ChatGPT to generate an image with Nair\u2019s same prompt, and it created an image of both men and women. Chanel did not immediately respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment. Microsoft declined comment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gender biases in AI\u2014and luxury<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>ChaptGPT has a history of slighting the movement of women in leadership roles. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/chatgpt-replicates-gender-bias-in-recommendation-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/chatgpt-replicates-gender-bias-in-recommendation-letters\/\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 study<\/a> from UCLA showed that when ChatGPT and Alpaca, a large-language model (LLM) built by Stanford University, were both asked to write recommendation letters for male and female candidates, they used words like \u201cexpert\u201d and \u201cintegrity\u201d to describe men, and \u201cbeauty\u201d and \u201cdelight\u201d to describe the women. LLMs have also previously been more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/buildaligned.ai\/blog\/using-faair-to-measure-gender-bias-in-llms\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/buildaligned.ai\/blog\/using-faair-to-measure-gender-bias-in-llms\" rel=\"noopener\">assume historically male-dominated occupations<\/a> like doctors are for men, and will automatically latch \u201che\u201d and \u201chim\u201d pronouns to those occupations.<\/p>\n<p>Nair believes that integrating AI into her company is nonnegotiable, but plans to introduce measures to address biases and hallucinations that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/06\/24\/chat-gpt-generative-ai-perplexity-hallucinations\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/06\/24\/chat-gpt-generative-ai-perplexity-hallucinations\" rel=\"noopener\">continue to plague<\/a> the technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI is everywhere, yes, and it\u2019s going to be transformative in our world, so luxury has to engage with it. Chanel has to engage with it,\u201d Nair said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important that we keep the ethics and integrity of what we\u2019re doing,\u201d she added. \u201cI constantly talk to my friends in tech, all the CEOs, saying, \u2018Come on, guys, you gotta make sure that you\u2019re integrating a humanistic way of thinking in AI.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The careful AI-vetting process aligns with Nair\u2019s previous work to address gender disparities in her own workplace. Since her tenure at Chanel began in 2021\u2014after <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/10\/25\/chanel-ceo-leena-nair-mba-unilever\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/10\/25\/chanel-ceo-leena-nair-mba-unilever\/\" rel=\"noopener\">working 30 years<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/unilever\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/unilever\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Unilever<\/a>, where she rose to the rank of chief human resources officer\u2014Nair has increased the company\u2019s percentage of female managers from 38% to <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/women-of-the-year\/6691525\/leena-nair\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/women-of-the-year\/6691525\/leena-nair\/\" rel=\"noopener\">about 60%<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Nair\u2019s role as global CEO disrupts a long line of male executives that have helmed the company. Beyond Maureen Chiquet, who served as <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\/podcast\/knowledge-at-wharton-podcast\/how-a-literature-major-became-chanels-first-global-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\/podcast\/knowledge-at-wharton-podcast\/how-a-literature-major-became-chanels-first-global-ceo\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chanel\u2019s first female global CEO<\/a> from 2007 to 2016, no other woman besides Nair has had the title of chief executive in the brand\u2019s 114-year history.
