More than a dozen anonymous claims \u2014 many made by individuals who allege they were victimized when they were underage, including in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/sean-diddy-combs-new-lawsuits-sexual-assault-young-boys-1236047252\/\">one case a 10-year-old boy<\/a> \u2014 allege <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/sean-diddy-combs-accused-sexual-assault-new-civil-suit-rcna176296\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/sean-diddy-combs-accused-sexual-assault-new-civil-suit-rcna176296\">sexual assault and rape<\/a> over a span of decades. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/sean-diddy-combs-hit-new-civil-suit-alleging-rape-college-student-two-rcna175289\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/sean-diddy-combs-hit-new-civil-suit-alleging-rape-college-student-two-rcna175289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Combs has issued a sweeping denial<\/a>, dismissing the \u201csickening\u201d declarations as motivated by a \u201cquick payday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut Tony Buzbee, who at this point professes to be representing more than 150 Combs accusers through his eponymous Houston-based firm, contends he\u2019s just getting started. \u201cWe expect to be filing cases weekly naming Mr. Combs and others as defendants as we continue to gather evidence and prepare the filings,\u201d he said in an Oct. 27 statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBuzbee is an outsized figure in the Lone Star legal world with a national reputation. More than a decade ago <em>The New York Times<\/em> described him as \u201ca big, mean, ambitious, tenacious, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/29\/us\/in-politics-never-say-never-to-an-aggie.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/29\/us\/in-politics-never-say-never-to-an-aggie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fire-breathing Texas trial lawyer<\/a>.\u201d Locally, he\u2019s known for spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/houston-mayoral-election-headed-for-a-runoff\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/houston-mayoral-election-headed-for-a-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$10 million of his own money<\/a> on a failed Houston mayoral bid and rankling his neighborhood homeowners association in the ritzy River Oaks enclave by parking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/the-daily-post\/complete-story-river-oaks-tank\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/the-daily-post\/complete-story-river-oaks-tank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sherman M4A4 tank<\/a> he won at auction in front of his property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe made his fortune suing and often settling cases against gas giants, chemical firms and trucking companies. Prior to the Diddy docket, he helped a sizable group of women reach out-of-court agreements with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/the-daily-post\/complete-story-river-oaks-tank\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/the-daily-post\/complete-story-river-oaks-tank\/\">NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson <\/a>over sexual misconduct allegations. In recent years he\u2019s also been in the news for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/25\/us\/texas-court-drops-criminal-case-against-rick-perry.html\">successfully defending<\/a> former Gov. Rick Perry against abuse-of-power accusations and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/rebecca-grossman-westlake-village-crash-sentence\/3432639\/\">unsuccessfully defending<\/a> Los Angeles socialite Rebecca Grossman, who was convicted of second-degree murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBuzbee discussed his legal crusade against Combs at an Oct. 1 press conference held in the conference room of his 73rd-floor office near the top of the JPMorgan Chase Tower, the tallest building in Texas. Standing before a step-and-repeat printed with a hotline number for potential sexual assault clients to call, Buzbee promised that \u201cwe are going to follow this evidence wherever it takes us. We will find the silent accomplices. We will expose the enablers who enabled this conduct behind closed doors.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe claimed that his team had by that time already been contacted by more than 3,000 people about Combs and that a vetting process was underway by a task force that included a former detective from the Major Offenders Division of the Houston Police Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe press conference, hotline and Buzbee\u2019s coordinated social media posts run counter to an assertion on his firm\u2019s website, which avows that \u201cwe don\u2019t advertise for cases.\u201d His office previously announced it was looking for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.txattorneys.com\/news-pr\/mass-casualty-incident-at-astrofest-2021\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.txattorneys.com\/news-pr\/mass-casualty-incident-at-astrofest-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> potential Astroworld claimants <\/a>the day after the deadly tragedy at Travis Scott\u2019s concert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBuzbee provided details about the demographics of his purported cohort of Combs accusers, which then by his count totaled 120 people. He noted that more than two dozen of the individuals were minors when the alleged misconduct occurred and that the group\u2019s gender breakdown is evenly divided. He also observed that the accusers are primarily Black and mostly from California, New York, Georgia and Florida \u2014 states where the putative misdeeds occurred, mostly at parties and auditions, in hotels and at private residences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBuzbee explained that many of his new clients had police reports, medical records and other evidence to support their claims, including photos and videos, and that while each case is different, patterns have emerged, including the apparent deployment of Xylazine, or \u201ctranq,\u201d a sedative for horses. Pushing back against skepticism about the sheer scale of accusers by noting that \u201cwe\u2019re talking about more than 25 years of this type of conduct,\u201d he urged more individuals to come forward, citing \u201cgreat strength in numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cTypically, the victim is lured into a situation where he or she is given a drink,\u201d he said at the press conference. \u201cTypically, that drink, as reported by these victims, is laced with something. Once that drink takes effect, the perpetrators perform all kinds of sexual acts on the victims, many times passing him or her around as other people watch and enjoy the show, and then leave the victim ashamed, confused, injured and wondering what happened when the victim reaches out. He or she is told not to say anything. Sometimes there are threats of physical violence or financial repercussions or bodily harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBuzbee\u2019s firm is working the cases in association with a California-based personal injury firm run by Andrew Van Arsdale, who has a history of pursuing sexual abuse cases against the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the Mormon and Catholic churches. (Arsdale has recently been <a href=\"https:\/\/avalaw.com\/abercrombie-fitch-former-ceo-mike-jeffries-sex-trafficking-scandal\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/avalaw.com\/abercrombie-fitch-former-ceo-mike-jeffries-sex-trafficking-scandal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">canvassing for clients <\/a>for litigation against former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/abercrombie-and-fitch-ceo-mike-jeffries-arrested-sex-trafficking-1236041035\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/abercrombie-and-fitch-ceo-mike-jeffries-arrested-sex-trafficking-1236041035\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abercrombie &amp; Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries, who pled not guilty<\/a> on Oct. 25 to sex trafficking in New York federal court.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBuzbee is aware that much of the public interest in this saga isn\u2019t just in Combs or his victims but the potential for other famous figures to be exposed by it, as direct accomplices or complicit abettors. \u201cThe day will come when we will name names other than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sean-combs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sean-combs_1\" data-tag=\"sean-combs\">Sean Combs<\/a>, and there\u2019s a lot of names \u2014 it\u2019s a long list already,\u201d he promised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMuch of the job for attorneys like Buzbee, who declined to speak about his Combs-related work with <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, is to negotiate confidential financial pacts for accusers out of court, which the people paying them often regard as extortionate. Pugnacious private as well as public rhetoric can be a key part of the playbook. \u201cI\u2019m talking about the people that participated, encouraged it, egged it on,\u201d he said on Oct. 1. \u201cThey know who they are.
