Previous images <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/curiosity-captured-two-solar-eclipses-on-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">includes a video taken by the Curiosity rover<\/a> in 2019 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-rovers-watching-solar-eclipses-by-mars-moons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photo that the Opportunity rover<\/a> snapped in 2004.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000n356mw18pn28d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With each video or photo of a Martian eclipse that a robotic explorer takes, astronomers can better understand the changing orbit of Phobos and how its days are numbered.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000o356m7fs3mvxr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Phobos completes an orbit around the Martian equator every 7.6 hours, or three times a day, and is about 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) from the surface of the red planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000p356meloza4h7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pockmarked by thousands of meteorites, this moon was once nearly shattered by a giant impact. While it survived the collision, Phobos remains doomed. The tiny moon is drawing closer to Mars at a rate of 6 feet (1.8 meters) every 100 years, and it will either crash into Mars in 50 million years or break up and become a ring around the planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000q356myovj76j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronomer Asaph Hall discovered Mars\u2019 two moons, Phobos and Deimos, in 1877.\u00a0He named them for the Greek gods associated with fear and panic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000r356mywwgtd78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronomers suspect Phobos and Deimos may be asteroids captured in orbit by Mars\u2019 gravity or fragments scattered during a giant impact with Mars, but mysteries persist about the Martian moons.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000s356mm1a6swwo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmx.jaxa.jp\/en\/mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martian Moons eXploration mission<\/a>, or MMX, intends to solve some of those enduring riddles. The mission, expected to launch in 2026, will closely observe both moons before landing on Phobos, retrieving a sample from that moon and returning it to Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000t356ms30985kw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the Perseverance rover <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/mars-2020-perseverance\/perseverance-rover\/nasas-perseverance-rover-looks-back-while-climbing-slippery-slope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continues its arduous climb<\/a> up the slippery, 20-degree-sloped surface of the crater wall, which is covered in loosely packed dust and sand and a fine layer of brittle crust.\n    <\/p>\n<div up the incline, switchbacking and driving closer to the northern edge of \u201cSummerland Trail,\u201d the name given to the rover\u2019s route up the rim.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000v356m4vw1qz5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Following the northern edge has been the most efficient method for Perseverance\u2019s climb, likely due to the presence of large rocks close to the surface that provide more traction.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000w356mwoyomvxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team anticipates the rover will reach the scientifically intriguing crater rim by December.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000x356mbnqxwt7r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rover recently shared a mosaic that stitches together 44 images showcasing landmark moments from its 3 \u00bd-year journey on the red planet, including its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/22\/world\/mars-rover-new-video-images-scn-trnd\/index.html\">landing site<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/25\/world\/nasa-mars-ingenuity-helicopter-mission-ends-scn\/index.html\">final airfield of the Ingenuity helicopter<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<div begin to get an idea what we\u2019re dealing with. Mars didn\u2019t want to make it easy for anyone to get to the top of this ridge.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2xcyh53000z356mtu4k7imz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once Perseverance crests the crater rim, it will head for Witch Hazel Hill, a light-colored bedrock feature identified by the rover\u2019s science team as a spot that might be ideal for drilling a rock sample.
