Jim Hampton was among the rafters with French Broad Adventures who worked with the Walnut Volunteer Fire Department on swift water rescues after Helene&#8217;s flooding. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>MADISON COUNTY, N.C. \u2013<\/strong> Experienced white-water rafters in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina<\/a> spent more than two weeks on the French Broad River after Hurricane <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/helene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helene<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/flood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flooding<\/a>, rescuing their neighbors in extreme conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Brothers Jim, Mike and Mitch Hampton, along with Mitch\u2019s wife Korey, are part of the swift-water rescue team for the Walnut Volunteer Fire Department in western North Carolina. The Hamptons own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frenchbroadrafting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Broad Adventures<\/a> rafting tour company in Madison County, and across the family have more than 145 years of white-water rafting experience between them. One of those calls was for a harrowing rescue at the Iron Horse Station, a landmark inn in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/north-carolina\/hot-springs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hot Springs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;There were five people up in the top story. Ultimately, the rescue was too risky, and the man was swept away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;There was debris everywhere, and if our 13-foot boat hit the tree trunk, we would have capsized and been done,&#8221; Hampton said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">More than a month after Helene, the Walnut Fire Department continues to get calls for swift-water resources, but it\u2019s for when a body is recovered.
