Martin\u2019s epic fantasy universe, <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has learned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMultiple sources describe the project as very early stage development, with no filmmaker, cast or writer yet attached. But the company is keen on exploring the idea of Westeros invading cinemas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe move might represent a shift in the company\u2019s strategy regarding the property. The showrunners of the original <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> series (David Benioff and Dan Weiss) famously wanted to conclude the series with three feature films instead of its 2019 final season.\u00a0Martin was also keen on the idea of a movie and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/game-thrones-movies-eyed-by-689629\/\">the author told<\/a> <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> back in 2014 that concepts were being kicked around. But for a long time, HBO strongly resisted the idea and instead wanted to preserve the prestige series as an HBO property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSince the end of the original series, however, there have been countless changes to the company\u2019s executive ranks (with HBO now headed by Casey Bloys and the film studio led by Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy), as well with the film vs. TV landscape \u2014 including an increased willingness to shift cinematic properties to the small screen and back again. There has been Matt Reeves\u2019 box office hit <em>The Batman<\/em> launching its acclaimed HBO spin-off <em>The Penguin<\/em>, Max\u2019s upcoming <em>Dune: Prophecy<\/em> TV series following the success of Denis Villeneuve\u2019s two films, HBO prepping a new take on J.K. Rowling\u2019s Harry Potter novels as a TV series, and Warner Bros. developing new <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em> movies even as Amazon unfurls its <em>The Rings of Power<\/em> TV show. In short: the idea that a genre property either needs to be a movie or TV show has become outdated, so it\u2019s unsurprising that <em>Thrones<\/em> might be the next property to cross mediums. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2022, HBO launched the hit prequel series <em>House of the Dragon<\/em>, which recently aired its second season. The network also has the upcoming prequel series <em>A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/em> planned for 2025. There are other ideas in development, as well.
