According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2024-10-30\/new-amazon-alexa-ai-is-stuck-in-the-lab-till-it-can-outsmart-chatgpt\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>, the launch of a new Alexa \u2014 billed as a smarter, more capable AI-powered voice assistant \u2014 has been pushed back. Again. \u201cA person familiar with the matter said Alexa AI teams were recently told that their target deadline had been moved into 2025,\u201d writes <em>Bloomberg<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/20\/23880764\/amazon-ai-alexa-generative-llm-smart-home\">The revamped voice assistant<\/a>, first announced last September, was expected to arrive this year, toting ChatGPT-style intelligence and more natural, conversational interactions. But earlier this summer,\u00a0<em>Fortune<\/em> reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/6\/13\/24177664\/amazon-llm-alexa-delayed-fortune\">the new Alexa might never be ready<\/a>.\u00a0Then, for the first time in half a decade, fall came and went without a big splashy Amazon event, and the rumors appeared to be true.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">It seems we can\u2019t have a smarter\u00a0Alexa <em>and<\/em>\u00a0a more capable Alexa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As further evidence that the company is retrenching, Amazon has cut off access to the beta of the new Alexa. You used to be able to request access by saying, \u201cAlexa, let\u2019s chat\u201d to an Echo device. Now, the assistant responds with, \u201cLet&#8217;s Chat is no longer available. For now, you can ask me questions or do things like set a timer, play music, turn on a connected light, and more.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Bloomberg\u2019s<\/em> sources say those beta users who did get to chat have been unimpressed (I requested access several times but with no luck). Responses were slow, sounded stiff, and weren\u2019t \u201call that useful,\u201d they said. Plus, the new Alexa messes up smart home integrations, hallucinates, and apparently tries to show off. <em>Bloomberg<\/em> reports: <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote jzbdts2\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup jzbdtsa jzbdts0\">One tester says the ongoing hallucinations aren\u2019t always wrong, just uncalled for, as if\u00a0Alexa\u00a0is trying to show off its newfound prowess. For instance, before, if you asked\u00a0Alexa\u00a0what halftime show Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson performed at, it might say the 2004 Super Bowl. Now, it\u2019s just as likely to give a long-winded addendum about the infamous wardrobe malfunction. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The challenge appears to lie in integrating large language models with the command and control method of today\u2019s voice assistants. It seems we can\u2019t have a smarter\u00a0Alexa <em>and<\/em>\u00a0a more capable Alexa. According to <em>Bloomberg\u2019s<\/em> sources, using pre-trained AI models allows Alexa to answer more complicated questions but makes it more likely to fail at setting a kitchen timer or controlling smart lights. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Old Alexa may have its issues, but it can (mostly) reliably control my smart lights. No one is asking for a digital assistant they can chat with at home, but who won\u2019t get off the couch to turn out the lights. While he\u2019s said publicly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/31\/24284920\/amazon-ceo-andy-jassy-says-the-revamped-alexa-will-arrive-in-the-near-future\">\u201cWe continue to re-architect the brain of Alexa &#8230; \u201d<\/a>,\u00a0there\u2019s been scant information about what an LLM-powered Alexa will bring to its millions of users \u2014 beyond being able to converse more naturally. Panos Panay has been at the company for a year now, and Bloomberg reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/27\/23892462\/amazon-hires-panos-panay-microsoft\">former head of Microsoft\u2019s Surface division<\/a> has \u201cbrought a focus on higher-quality design to a group adept at utilitarian gadgets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24282710\/amazon-alexa-ai-star-trek-computer-10-years-assistant\">I wrote this week<\/a>, Amazon&#8217;s prior tact of making copious amounts of cheap hardware at the expense of better software is partly why Alexa hasn\u2019t gotten measurably smarter over the last decade.
