In recent years, some astronomers proposed a radical theory that, rather than being diffusely spread throughout all space, dark energy could emerge from the hearts of gigantic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/black-holes\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/black-holes\"><u>black holes<\/u><\/a>. Others, however, discounted the proposal as outlandish.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a new study claims to have found the first hints of a connection between the two seemingly unrelated phenomena: a match between the increasing density of dark energy and the growing mass of black holes as the universe aged. This enables astronomers to infer the density of dark energy throughout the universe&#8217;s life from the speed at which the cosmos stretches outward.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-fREqUuUhTZ5xdzBtZKCQBc\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-fREqUuUhTZ5xdzBtZKCQBc slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>By comparing this proxy data for dark energy to black hole growth at different stages of the universe&#8217;s life, the researchers made an intriguing observation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The two phenomena were consistent with each other \u2014 as new black holes were made in the deaths of massive stars, the amount of dark energy in the universe increased in the right way,&#8221; co-author <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phys.hawaii.edu\/profile\/DrFarrah\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.phys.hawaii.edu\/profile\/DrFarrah\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Duncan Farrah<\/u><\/a>, an associate professor of physics at the University of Hawaii, said in the statement. &#8220;This makes it more plausible that black holes are the source of dark energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the hypothesis is borne out, it could help to solve a growing conundrum in cosmology. For years, astronomers have found that the universe appears to be expanding at different speeds depending on where they look \u2014 a problem they call the Hubble tension.
