Trump on Thursday night insulted Liz Cheney, one of his most outspoken Republican critics, and used menacing imagery to suggest she should be sent into the line of fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During an onstage interview with Tucker Carlson, a former Fox News host and a top Trump ally, Mr. Trump hurled personal attacks at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/21\/us\/politics\/harris-liz-cheney-pennsylvania-michigan-wisconsin.html\" title=\"\">Ms. Cheney, who is campaigning<\/a> with Vice President Kamala Harris. Then, taking issue with her foreign policy approach, he suggested she should be put in a war zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShe\u2019s a radical war hawk,\u201d Mr. Trump said, in front of thousands at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Ariz. \u201cLet\u2019s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let\u2019s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He continued by expressing disdain for those in Washington who wanted to see the United States involved in foreign conflicts. \u201cYou know, they\u2019re all war hawks when they\u2019re sitting in Washington in a nice building, saying, \u2018Oh, gee, well, let\u2019s send, let\u2019s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s violent hypothetical came as he has recently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/26\/us\/politics\/trump-democracy-threats.html\" title=\"\">intensified the dark and at times threatening language<\/a> he uses toward his political opponents. The former president, whose lie that he won the 2020 election spurred some of his supporters to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, once again on Thursday referred to a pernicious \u201cenemy within\u201d that needed to be addressed. He has previously described his enemies as \u201cvermin\u201d that needed to be rooted out. (Ms. Cheney was the top Republican on the House committee that investigated Mr. Trump\u2019s role in the Capitol riot.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His language reflects the charged environment surrounding this year\u2019s election.
