Then throughout the day, I might move to the back of the class to catch another few winks.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000l3b6mbmokzh7k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By age 20, Horsnell began losing control of his body for brief periods when he felt a strong emotion, falling or slumping to the ground conscious but paralyzed \u2014 a condition called <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/cataplexy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cataplexy.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000m3b6mmwvhscgv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf I\u2019m startled or someone tells a really funny joke, my knees may buckle, or I may drop something. I can even fall over,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat\u2019s scary and embarrassing is that I can see people come to help me, but I\u2019m unable to respond.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000n3b6mqg70d2ak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Horsnell has <a href=\"https:\/\/narcolepsynetwork.org\/about-narcolepsy\/narcolepsy-fast-facts\/#:~:text=Narcolepsy%20affects%20an%20estimated%201,diagnosed%20and%20are%20receiving%20treatment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">narcolepsy,<\/a> a sleep disorder that makes it hard to stay awake for long periods. Not only will a person fall asleep repeatedly during the day, but they will have extremely disrupted sleep at night, said Jennifer Mundt, assistant professor of sleep medicine, psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University\u2019s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000o3b6m9qi4824g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Narcolepsy is estimated to affect one in 2,000 people in the United States and some 3 million worldwide, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/narcolepsynetwork.org\/about-narcolepsy\/narcolepsy-fast-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Narcolepsy Network<\/a>, a non-profit patient advocacy group. However, that estimate is likely low due to difficulties with obtaining a proper diagnosis, said Mundt, who treats patients with narcolepsy and conducts research on the condition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000p3b6me1snbcx9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fact, it\u2019s estimated that only 25% of people who have narcolepsy are diagnosed and receive treatment, according to the Narcolepsy Network.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000q3b6mb7yjj05c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOn average, it takes 10 or more years to get diagnosed, so we know there\u2019s a lot of people out there who may have it and are going untreated,\u201d Mundt said. \u201cMany people are never seen by a sleep specialist, who is one of the few physicians trained to recognize the symptoms.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000r3b6mro6w29iq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A large percentage of people with narcolepsy have cataplexy as well, which along with excessive sleepiness disrupts a person\u2019s ability to socialize, work at a job, drive a car or even have close relationships that trigger intense emotions, Mundt said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000s3b6m219k4lac@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s been so much stigma around narcolepsy,\u201d she said. \u201cIn movies it\u2019s usually depicted as this very comical thing, like it\u2019s a joke. It\u2019s not a joke, it\u2019s a very serious illness.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000t3b6m2ljjfojd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his early years at college, Horsnell was doing a squat routine with particularly strenuous weights at a local gym when he felt his knees begin to wobble. Suddenly, he was afraid.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000u3b6mwhgwues4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFear overwhelmed my body, and so when I went down for that next rep, my body just gave out and the entire weight bar came crashing down,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000v3b6m4y81frtx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fortunately, the weight was caught by the machine\u2019s rack, leaving Horsnell with only a few bumps and a bruised ego.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000w3b6mwaxi73gb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut the terrifying thing was, I\u2019m lying in a puddle of my sweat and I\u2019m hearing everybody whisper, \u2018Is he OK? Do we need to call an ambulance?\u2019 And my first words when I was able to break through the paralysis was, \u2018Please don\u2019t call an ambulance!\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000x3b6mtc43xihm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At first, Horsnell blamed the incident on low blood sugar. But then he began slurring his words and had to prop himself up by the elbow or lean against a wall to keep from toppling over while laughing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000y3b6mhcsyg8h0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you fall, the likelihood of catching yourself is basically nil \u2014 gravity takes over,\u201d he said. \u201cLord knows, I busted my noggin a few times, and had a concussion on at least two occasions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7000z3b6mvnvh3sg8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Horsnell has other common signs of narcolepsy as well, including nightmares and visual and tactile <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/23234-hypnagogic-hallucinations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypnagogic hallucinations<\/a>, which occur while a person is falling asleep. Typically manifesting as flashing lights, patterns or shapes, such hallucinations are quite common among the general public, experts say. Horsnell\u2019s experience with narcolepsy hallucinations, however, is quite different.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700103b6mycep7vvb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI feel or I see whatever may be in my dream \u2014 like a deceased woman falling on top of my chest,\u201d he said. \u201cI can feel the weight of her body. I can feel her hair tickle my neck. I can see her right in front of my face. It\u2019s quite a nasty experience.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700113b6m0fi65147@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When he\u2019s extremely tired, these hallucinations can even occur before he gets into bed, Horsnell said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700123b6medd4b0sm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI may look into a corner and see a figure that\u2019s not really there, but I see the very clear outline of the shape, and my body is projecting this dream onto the reality,\u201d he said. \u201cI will hear conversations that are taking place that aren\u2019t actually taking place. It can be a little bit disconcerting if you don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700133b6me89nu147@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nightmares plague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1389945714001245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-third<\/a> of people with narcolepsy, while hallucinations are also quite common, said Mundt, who recently conducted a <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jsr.14384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">successful pilot study<\/a> on using cognitive behavioral sleep techniques to control nightmares in people with narcolepsy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700143b6mh2m9fr3m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s like your brain is flip-flopping in and out of sleep during both day and night,\u201d she said. \u201cThat produces a lot of these symptoms, like the sleep paralysis, sleep hallucinations, and even uncertainty of whether you were asleep or dreaming, because waking up so much creates all this disruption.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700153b6mjl6m9aez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since his symptoms started at age 12, Horsnell saw a pediatrician, an internist and four psychiatrists before visiting a sleep specialist in 2007. Finally, he had a diagnosis \u2014 type one narcolepsy with cataplexy, the most common form of the disease. This type of narcolepsy is often confirmed by a spinal tap showing a lack of the neurotransmitter orexin. Also known as hypocretin, orexin plays a key role in regulating appetite and sleep.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700163b6m9i5qovdb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat we think happens is the body\u2019s immune system attacks the part of the brain that makes orexin, so it\u2019s classified as an autoimmune reaction,\u201d Mundt said. \u201cPeople with type two narcolepsy, however, don\u2019t have a lack of orexin, which we don\u2019t fully understand.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700183b6mcycb31j0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The gene associated with narcolepsy is present in approximately 25% of the population, but only one in 500 will develop the sleep disorder, according to Narcolepsy Network.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo700193b6m06rs4tsv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists now believe the trigger for developing narcolepsy may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/health-information\/disorders\/narcolepsy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacterial and viral infections<\/a>, such as strep throat or a form of the flu.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7001a3b6mzhlwurq7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSomeone might get the flu, which then starts this auto immune response that ends up basically destroying that part of the brain that makes orexin,\u201d Mundt said. \u201cThen months later, you start to develop narcolepsy because your brain is no longer making orexin.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7001b3b6mvrjxzgcn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is no drug to treat narcolepsy, but medications can tackle some of the worst symptoms. Horsnell, who believes his narcolepsy was triggered by a bad case of strep throat as a child, has tried most \u2014 stimulants to keep him up during the day, along with strong sleep aids at night to stave off constant awakenings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7001c3b6m71u7p94u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sodium oxybate, <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a605032.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold illegally as GHB<\/a>, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/xyrem-sodium-oxybate-information#:~:text=GHB%20is%20a%20Schedule%20I,are%20controlled%20under%20Schedule%20III.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controlled substance<\/a> approved by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/xyrem-sodium-oxybate-information#:~:text=FDA%2Dapproved%20products%20containing%20sodium,are%20controlled%20under%20Schedule%20III.&amp;text=On%20January%2017%2C%202017%2C%20the,of%20Xyrem%20(sodium%20oxybate).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Food and Drug Administration<\/a> to help with the sudden muscle weakness that precedes a catatonic episode. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jneurosci.org\/content\/30\/8\/2810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Histamines<\/a> can help boost levels of orexin in the brain, while certain <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9030766\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antidepressants<\/a> may improve cataplexy as well.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7001d3b6m26ng357l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you\u2019re having a strong emotional response, if you can take some medications that can blunt or mute that emotion, that can possibly reduce the reaction,\u201d Horsnell said.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cm2uy4q5c00203b6mdnhq5yu0@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uxpoo7001e3b6mis5dx5o1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, Horsnell spends time with his wife and three children, and says he volunteers as a \u201csleep ambassador\u201d for various narcolepsy associations and advocacy organizations such <a href=\"https:\/\/project-sleep.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Sleep,<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behavioralsleep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Society for Behavioral Sleep Medicine<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sleepresearchsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sleep Research Society<\/a>, and the <a
