But for all the AI hype, there are clearly limitations with the technology\u2019s intelligence. And one of those limits was highlighted by Apple\u2019s AI research through a recent experiment.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-976335\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-testing-ai-s-capabilities\">Testing AI\u2019s capabilities<\/h2>\n<p>Last month, a team of Apple\u2019s researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2410.05229\">published a new paper<\/a> about a key AI limitation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2024-11-01\/column-these-apple-researchers-just-proved-that-ai-bots-cant-think-and-possibly-never-will\">Michael Hiltzik writes for <em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>See if you can solve this arithmetic problem:<\/p>\n<p>Oliver picks 44 kiwis on Friday. Then he picks 58 kiwis on Saturday. On Sunday, he picks double the number of kiwis he did on Friday, but five of them were a bit smaller than average. How many kiwis does Oliver have?<\/p>\n<p>If you answered \u201c190,\u201d congratulations: You did as well as the average grade school kid by getting it right. (Friday\u2019s 44 plus Saturday\u2019s 58 plus Sunday\u2019s 44 multiplied by 2, or 88, equals 190.) <\/p>\n<p>You also did better than more than 20 state-of-the-art artificial intelligence models tested by an AI research team at Apple. The AI bots, they found, consistently got it wrong. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The research paper explains that the best and brightest LLM models saw \u201ccatastrophic performance drops\u201d when trying to answer simple math problems that were written out like this. <\/p>\n<p>It happened primarily when those problems included irrelevant data, which even schoolchildren quickly learn to disregard.<\/p>\n<p>Thus calling into question AI\u2019s current intelligence capabilities.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-apple-s-ai-research-finds-intelligence-is-not-what-it-appears\">Apple\u2019s AI research finds \u2018intelligence\u2019 is not what it appears<\/h2>\n<p>Due to the variety of tests Apple\u2019s AI research entailed, the paper concludes that current AI models are \u2018not capable of genuine logical reasoning.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Which might be something we\u2019re generally aware of, but it stands as an important cautionary note as more and more trust is given to AI\u2019s \u2018intelligence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>AI optimists might assume the problem is an easy fix, but Apple\u2019s team <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mfarajtabar\/status\/1844456907685417423?s=61&amp;t=a-bloX1n-TZ50ofqhetO1A\">disagreed<\/a>. \u201cCan scaling data, models, or compute fundementaly solve this? We don\u2019t think so!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Apple\u2019s paper is not meant to dampen enthusiasm over AI\u2019s capabilities, but rather provide a measure of common sense. <\/p>\n<p>AI can perform some tasks as though it\u2019s extremely intelligent, but in many ways that \u2018intelligence\u2019 isn\u2019t what it might appear.<\/p>\n<p>What do you make of Apple\u2019s AI findings?
