Vaccinations are an essential function of a public health department.<\/p>\n<p>While policymakers in Texas banned health departments from <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/immunizations\/what-we-do\/vaccines\/covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promoting COVID vaccines<\/a><\/span> and Florida\u2019s <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/florida-surgeon-general-covid-vaccine-study-b3be9c2f22974176ae15d38025882335\">surgeon general<\/a><\/span> bucked medical consensus to recommend against the vaccine, governmental bodies across the country <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-department-michigan-covid-ottawa-county-06e0312a5bf7d34cfe1019443f87f3db\">haven\u2019t blocked the vaccines<\/a><\/span> outright.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not aware of anything else like this,\u201d said Adriane Casalotti, chief of government and public affairs for the National Association of County and City Health Officials. She said health departments have stopped offering the vaccine because of cost or low demand, but not based on \u201ca judgment of the medical product itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The six-county district along the Idaho-Oregon border includes three counties in the Boise metropolitan area. Demand for <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-science-health-england-54d29ae3af5c700f15d704c14ee224b5\">COVID vaccines<\/a><\/span> in the health district has declined \u2014 with 1,601 given in 2021 to 64 so far in 2024. The same is true for other vaccines: Idaho has <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vaccines-waivers-schools-measles-idaho-e7015d8fd38ec80802eeae350755a402\">the highest childhood vaccination exemption rate in the nation<\/a><\/span>, and last year, the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vaccines-waivers-schools-measles-idaho-e7015d8fd38ec80802eeae350755a402\">Southwest District Health Department rushed<\/a><\/span> to contain a rare measles outbreak that sickened 10.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 22, the health department\u2019s board voted 4-3 in favor of the ban \u2014 despite Southwest\u2019s medical director testifying to the vaccine\u2019s necessity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur request of the board is that we would be able to carry and offer those (vaccines), recognizing that we always have these discussions of risks and benefits,\u201d Dr. Perry Jansen <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tkgaaY6CzIc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said at the meeting.<\/a><\/span> \u201cThis is not a blind, everybody-gets-a-shot approach. This is a thoughtful approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposite Jansen\u2019s plea were more than 290 public comments, many of which called for an end to vaccine mandates or taxpayer funding of the vaccines, neither of which are happening in the district. At the meeting, many people who spoke are nationally known for making the rounds to testify against COVID vaccines, including <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-check-covid-vaccines-athlete-deaths-1500-989195878254\">Dr. Peter McCullough<\/a><\/span>, a Texas cardiologist who sells \u201ccontagion emergency kits\u201d that include <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-legislature-missouri-f9c4728e1a993947c96adef2abc1fd96\">ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Board Chairman Kelly Aberasturi was familiar with many of the voices who wanted the ban, especially from earlier local protests of pandemic measures.<\/p>\n<p>Aberasturi, who told The Associated Press that he\u2019s skeptical of COVID-19 vaccines and national public health leaders, said in the meeting and in an interview with the AP that he was supportive of but \u201cdisappointed\u201d in the board\u2019s decision. <\/p>\n<p>He said the board had overstepped the relationship between patients and their doctors \u2014 and possibly opened a door to blocking other vaccines or treatments. <\/p>\n<p>Board members in favor of the decision argued people can get vaccinated elsewhere, and that providing the shots was equivalent to signing off on their safety. (Some people may be reluctant to get vaccinated or boosted because of misinformation about the shots despite evidence that they\u2019re safe and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-science-health-england-54d29ae3af5c700f15d704c14ee224b5\">have saved millions of lives<\/a><\/span>.)<\/p>\n<p>The people getting vaccinated at the health department \u2014 including people without housing, people who are homebound and those in long-term care facilities or in the immigration process \u2014 had no other options, Jansen and Aberasturi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been homeless in my lifetime, so I understand how difficult it can be when you\u2019re &#8230; trying to get by and get ahead,\u201d Aberasturi said. \u201cThis is where we should be stepping in and helping. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we have some board members who have never been there, so they don\u2019t understand what it\u2019s like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State health officials have said that they \u201crecommend that people consider the COVID-19 vaccine.\u201d Idaho health department spokesperson AJ McWhorter declined to comment on \u201cpublic health district business,\u201d but noted that COVID-19 vaccines are still available at community health centers for people who are uninsured.<\/p>\n<p>Aberasturi said he plans to ask at the next board meeting if the health department can at least be allowed to vaccinate older patients and residents of long-term care facilities, adding that the board is supposed to be caring for the \u201chealth and well-being\u201d of the district\u2019s residents. \u201cBut I believe the way we went about this thing is we didn\u2019t do that due diligence.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>___<\/h2>\n<p>The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
