But having revived and modernized 1984\u2019s\u00a0<em>Top Gun<\/em>\u00a0with 2022\u2019s blockbuster\u00a0<em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>, the actor believes he can work similar magic with his racing drama (which, like the original\u00a0<em>Top Gun<\/em>, was a Paramount film produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Tony Scott). A <em>Thunder<\/em> revival has been floated before \u2014 Paramount once pitched a reboot of the title as a TV show for Paramount+, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/tom-cruise-mission-impossible-paramount-1235116830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">idea that Cruise nixed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKey factors include the project\u2019s script (the studio is out to potential writers now) and the 62-year-old actor-producer\u2019s packed schedule.\u00a0Cruise\u00a0is about to start shooting\u00a0<em>The Revenant<\/em>\u00a0filmmaker Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/tom-cruise-alejandro-inarritu-movie-1235833265\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mysterious next film<\/a> for Warner Bros.\/Legendary, developing a Doug Liman movie for Universal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/doug-liman-direct-tom-cruise-space-set-movie-1296052\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that\u2019s set in actual space<\/a>, and he\u2019s developing a sequel to\u00a0<em>Maverick<\/em>\u00a0(which Cruise and Paramount both consider a top priority).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s talking [to Paramount] about\u00a0<em>Top Gun<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Days of Thunder<\/em>,\u201d says a studio insider familiar with the discussions. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be what comes together first in terms of a script. It depends on the idea and, ultimately, the script.\u201d\u00a0(Cruise, sources say, has script approval over all of his projects). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRacing films have become rating fashionable lately, with the success of James Mangold\u2019s 2019 picture\u00a0<em>Ford v Ferrari<\/em>, Michael Mann\u2019s less successful 2023 racing drama\u00a0<em>Ferrari<\/em>, and next year\u2019s\u00a0<em>F1<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 which stars Brad Pitt and is directed by\u00a0<em>Maverick<\/em>\u00a0helmer Joseph Kosinski (who would seemingly be the ideal choice to helm <em>Thunder<\/em>, but one imagines he wouldn\u2019t be too keen on making back-to-back racing movies). The glut of recent fast-cars-on-tracks projects makes the prospect of resurrecting<em>  Thunder<\/em>\u00a0even more daunting (imagine if <em>Maverick<\/em> had been released after three other fighter pilot movies), but at least none of the other titles specifically explore the world of NASCAR racing, which has a decidedly different Americana vibe compared to the more European-based world of Le Mans and Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think a [<em>Days of Thunder<\/em>\u00a0sequel] is a terrible idea,\u201d added the Paramount source (the studio declined to comment for this story). \u201cYou might have said that revisiting\u00a0<em>Top Gun<\/em>\u00a0was a terrible idea. I wouldn\u2019t discount it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Days of Thunder<\/em>\u00a0certainly has its devotees, among them Tony Scott fan and collaborator Quentin Tarantino. \u201cHands down my favorite [racing movie] is\u00a0<em>Days of Thunder<\/em>,\u201d the director <a href=\"https:\/\/f1socialdiary.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/21\/quentin-tarantino-my-favourite-racing-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">was quoted<\/a> as saying in 2013. \u201cYeah, yeah, you laugh, but seriously, I\u2019m a big fan. Sure, it had a big budget, big stars and a big director in Tony Scott, but it had the fun of those early [American International Picture racing] movies. I just don\u2019t think [the genre] works if you take the whole thing too seriously.\u201d\u00a0<em>Thunder<\/em>\u00a0is also remembered as the film where Cruise met his former wife of 11 years, Nicole Kidman, who co-starred in the project as a neurosurgeon and love interest for Cruise\u2019s USAC racer Cole Trickle.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThen, there\u2019s writer-director Christopher McQuarrie\u2019s eagerly anticipated\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/mission-impossible\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mission-impossible\" data-tag=\"mission-impossible\">Mission: Impossible<\/a> 8<\/em>, which is finally wrapped and in post-production. The project has had a long and difficult journey, with a budget that\u2019s reportedly approaching $400 million amid production delays \u2014 partly due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile the franchise remains very popular and 2022\u2019s seventh entry\u00a0<em>Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning \u2014 Part One<\/em> largely drew raves (scoring more than 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes among both critics and audiences), the last film\u2019s budget before marketing was nearly $300 million and its box office return was considered disappointing ($566 million globally). Making matters more challenging for the upcoming film,\u00a0<em>Dead Reckoning<\/em>\u00a0ended on a cliffhanger \u2014 snapping the tradition of each\u00a0<em>M:I<\/em> adventure being a stand-alone entry where each film is wholly accessible to a fresh audience. Paramount has since dropped the \u201cPart One\u201d from 7\u2019s title. The new film\u2019s title will be revealed in the next couple of weeks when Paramount drops the first\u00a0<em>M:I 8<\/em>\u00a0trailer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOne intriguing wrinkle: Paramount has been interested in promoting\u00a0<em>M:I 8<\/em>\u00a0as the \u201cfinal\u201d entry in the action franchise as a way of boosting audience interest. Yet Cruise has been against saying a public goodbye to Ethan Hunt \u2014 not surprising, considering the preternaturally youthful actor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/tom-cruise-age-mission-impossible-1235529585\/\">was quoted last year<\/a> as saying he hopes to keep making\u00a0<em>M:I<\/em>\u00a0movies into his 80s. (\u201cHarrison Ford is a legend, I\u2019ve got 20 years to catch up with him,\u201d Cruise said. \u201cI hope to keep making\u00a0<em>Mission: Impossible<\/em>\u00a0films until I\u2019m his age.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tStill, Paramount is optimistic about\u00a0<em>M:I 8<\/em>\u00a0and bullishly wants to bring the film to Cannes \u2014 a move that\u2019s lately developed a reputation as high-risk for big-budget mainstream projects, given how the festival\u2019s critical reception torpedoed\u00a0<em>Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Horizon: An American Saga<\/em>\u00a0months before each title opened.
