While the condition does lead to disruptive and often repetitive compulsive behaviors, it\u2019s the persistent, intrusive thoughts that are most challenging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Some people may have OCD tendencies &#8211; such as wanting a tidy home &#8211; but have not been diagnosed with clinical OCD. The condition\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-13971507\/BRYONY-GORDON-OCD-tidy-killer-paedophile.html\" rel=\"noopener\">becomes a concern when feelings<\/a> of anxiety, disgust, or incompleteness intensify to the extent that they begin to dominate and significantly disrupt a person\u2019s ability to live their life, doctors and patients told <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/31\/nx-s1-5159606\/living-with-ocd-mental-health\">NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There are several subtypes of OCD. They all involve obsessive and compulsive thoughts, but may revolve around different worries &#8211; such as relationships.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Washington, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/washington-dc\/index.html\" id=\"mol-5138f740-9878-11ef-b214-376ff1efc7bc\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DC<\/a>\u00a0native Sarah Jaley said: \u2018I was constantly thinking like, we need to break up because I&#8217;m not good enough, or maybe there&#8217;s better matches for us somewhere else. What if the person I\u2019m dating isn\u2019t a good fit? What if we don\u2019t end up together? What if I don\u2019t truly love them? Or, what if they don\u2019t love me?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Both of them have <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-12761701\/Condition-psychologists-say-ruining-relationship.html\" rel=\"noopener\">relationship OCD<\/a>, a form of Pure Obsession OCD, referred to Pure O in online message boards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Pure O can be difficult to detect because, unlike the OCD that manifests physically, pure obsession OCD is often invisible. About 10 percent of OCD sufferers have this Pure O subtype.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Elizabeth Vossen, 26, from Boston, describes her Pure O as \u2018normal thought patterns in overdrive.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">At first, she believed her obsessions to be helpful for her work as a therapist. They sound like, \u2018Did I say the right thing? Did I do the right thing? Was I empathetic enough? Did I offer the right amount of help?,\u2019 Vossen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She added: \u2018And there&#8217;s always a part of me that&#8217;s like, well, isn&#8217;t that a good thing, don\u2019t I wanna be thinking really hard to be a good therapist?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, these thoughts became so intense and compulsive that they went beyond &#8216;normal&#8217; ruminations or concerns about past interactions or how others perceive them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">When she fixates on a past interaction, she feels compelled to analyze it thoroughly until she feels better, even if no new insights emerge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Vossen no longer works with clients who have OCD because the compulsive thoughts had become too much for her. After one patient shared a particular obsession, she began experiencing it herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She said: \u2018I asked about the character of their intrusive thoughts and they were like, \u201cOh, I imagine all of my teeth snapping. And I imagine like taking nail clippers and severing my teeth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018And now every single time I trim my nails or if I&#8217;m brushing my teeth, I am thinking about my teeth breaking and I&#8217;ll even, like, clench my jaw to feel like they&#8217;re all still there.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Meanwhile, Shaun Flores, 30, has been diagnosed with sexual orientation OCD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">People with SO-OCD may experience persistent doubts about their sexual orientation, fears of being or becoming gay, concerns about being perceived as a different sexual orientation, anxiety over how their orientation could impact relationships, and fears of being in denial about their true orientation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is believed to affect <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/manhattancbt.com\/hocd\/\">around 315,000 Americans<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mr Flores: \u2018I became obsessed with this idea that suddenly overnight I&#8217;d become gay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018So I\u2019d avoid people, avoid men. Not all repeated thoughts are obsessions, and not all rituals or habits are compulsions<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">His OCD led him to believe he was <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/hiv_aids\/index.html\" id=\"mol-5ce0dd00-9879-11ef-b214-376ff1efc7bc\" rel=\"noopener\">HIV<\/a> positive, compelling him to get tested repeatedly because he couldn&#8217;t trust the results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mr Flores grew up in a conservative Christian home in <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/london\/index.html\" id=\"mol-5ce6a960-9879-11ef-b214-376ff1efc7bc\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> where being gay was considered a mortal sin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He said: \u2018At a time, I was deeply homophobic. As I got older, I realized people can&#8217;t choose who they are. And even if they could, it&#8217;s not any of my business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018You learn to understand that the thoughts don&#8217;t necessarily reflect any parts of you. The brain creates random thoughts.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">OCD typically begins in childhood. Some of the behaviors associated with OCD in childhood include a fixation on germs, fear of contamination from animals or people, and a fear of touching surfaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It can also manifest as anxiety about accidentally hurting a family member or friend, superstitions that bad things are about to happen, and preoccupation with appearance and organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to mental health experts at the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-when-unwanted-thoughts-or-repetitive-behaviors-take-over\">NIH<\/a>, everyone rethinks or double-checks things sometimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Not all repeated thoughts are obsessions, and not all rituals or habits are compulsions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But, people with OCD generally can\u2019t control their obsessions or compulsions, even when they know they\u2019re excessive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They usually spend more than one hour a day on their obsessions or compulsions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They do not get pleasure from their compulsions but may feel temporary relief from their anxiety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They also experience significant problems in daily life due to these thoughts or behaviors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ritualistic, compulsive behavior and obsessive thinking are physically and emotionally draining.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The condition can make social interactions, working and even eating near-impossible.
