Former astronaut Kent Rominger admonished the company during an October 31 meeting of the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, citing a list of recent problems involving both SpaceX\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/spacex-fuel-falcon-9-with-astronauts-on-board\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Falcon 9 rocket;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Falcon 9 rocket<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/polaris-dawn-crew-shares-stunning-151825958.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dragon capsule;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Dragon capsule<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth NASA and SpaceX need to maintain focus on safe Crew Dragon operations and not take any \u2018normal\u2019 operations for granted,\u201d said the ASAP committee member on Thursday, as first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/nasa-panel-calls-on-spacex-to-maintain-focus-on-dragon-safety-after-recent-anomalies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:SpaceNews;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>SpaceNews<\/em><\/a>. Rominger also argued that safety requires increased attention on aging hardware, especially as \u201cthe pace of operations increases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX has documented multiple equipment malfunctions and setbacks since at least July when a Falcon 9 rocket\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/spacex-historic-falcon-9-success-192149218.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:second stage failed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">second stage failed<\/a> to ignite its second burn, causing it to explode roughly an hour after launch. After departing the ISS on October 23, the Dragon capsule made its <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/commercialcrew\/2024\/10\/25\/splashdown-nasas-spacex-crew-8-returns-safely-to-earth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:scheduled water landing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">scheduled water landing<\/a> two days later off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. NASA subsequently confirmed all four Crew-8 astronauts <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/commercialcrew\/2024\/10\/25\/nasa-provides-update-on-agencys-spacex-crew-8-health\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:required transport;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">required transport<\/a> to a nearby hospital for additional medical evaluations \u201cout of an abundance of caution.\u201d Although doctors soon released three crew members to continue their <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/spacestation\/2024\/10\/26\/nasas-spacex-crew-8-astronaut-returns-to-houston\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:post-flight reconditioning;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">post-flight reconditioning<\/a> at Johnson Space Center in Houston, one astronaut \u201cin stable condition\u201d was kept overnight at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola \u201cas a precautionary measure.\u201d To protect their medical privacy, NASA has not confirmed which astronaut required additional observations, or what issue prompted the prolonged hospital stay.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX has solidified itself in recent years as NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/science\/spacex-hubble-space-telescope-nasa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:primary private contractor;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">primary private contractor<\/a> for satellite launches, astronaut transport, ISS cargo deliveries, and other rocketry needs. Although competitors like Blue Origin seek to cut into the company\u2019s industry share, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/science\/boeing-starliner-returned-to-earth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:their own setbacks;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">their own setbacks<\/a> indicate SpaceX will continue to be one of the agency\u2019s primary resources\u2014but only if NASA can continue to trust the private company\u2019s attention to safety.
