severe cases, it can trigger potentially deadly <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/pneumonia\/index.html\" id=\"mol-d553a8c0-9875-11ef-ae68-65e0afa69770\" rel=\"noopener\">pneumonia<\/a> and <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/sepsis\/index.html\" id=\"mol-d553a8c1-9875-11ef-ae68-65e0afa69770\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sepsis<\/a>, the body&#8217;s overreaction to an infection that causes the immune system to attack healthy organs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Last year,\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention-cdc\/index.html\" id=\"mol-f3c42860-9871-11ef-ae68-65e0afa69770\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a> officials warned Burkholderia pseudomallei is now <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" hurricanes and monsoons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Humans can become infected with the bacteria via contact with contaminated soil and muddy water, particularly if they have an open wound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In rare cases, it can also be transmitted between humans \u2014 although this has only been reported via sexual contact and during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Burkholderia pseudomallei was <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-11055573\/Deadly-bacteria-causes-meliodosis-detected-Mississippi-water-CDC-reveals.html\" rel=\"noopener\">first detected in the US in 2022<\/a>\u00a0in soil and water samples along the Mississippi gulf coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Up until that point, US cases of\u00a0melioidosis had been tied to people bringing it back from areas like Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Symptoms include fever, headache, trouble breathing, stomach or chest pain, muscle pain, confusion, and seizures, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Signs typically develop within one to four weeks after being exposed to the bacteria, though some people don&#8217;t get sick until months or years after exposure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Though melioidosis usually shows up as a lung infection, it can spread to other organs like the liver, spleen, prostate, lymph nodes, and brain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening sepsis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Melioidosis is usually treated with long-term antibiotics, including IV antibiotics for at least two weeks (the intensive phase) and oral drugs for three to six months (the eradication phase).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">To prevent exposure to\u00a0Burkholderia pseudomallei, the CDC recommends avoiding soil or water if you have open founds and wear gloves and boots when working in
