Some internal proposals to support election officials\u2019 efforts to combat disinformation have made little headway. Easterly has also used her account on the social media platform X to push out facts about the voting process and has repeatedly gone on national television to discuss the security of the election process.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy00093b6mitr1rd96@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But inside CISA, sources told CNN there is frustration that the agency hasn\u2019t done more to help election officials counter lies that can inspire violent threats against those officials.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy000a3b6miz5fqakt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A fear of appearing partisan or of infringing on free speech has shackled the agency\u2019s approach to election-related falsehoods that Americans are freely sharing, the sources said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy000b3b6mgp77iqz1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In late September, Sen. Mark Warner, the powerful chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, sent Easterly a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warner.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2024\/9\/senate-intel-chair-warner-pushes-cisa-to-step-up-to-prevent-influence-in-the-2024-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stern letter<\/a> imploring her to do more to combat disinformation ahead of the election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy000c3b6m18o3cf44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI strongly urge you to use all the tools at your disposal\u201d to support state and local election officials in the face of an \u201cunprecedented rise in targeted disinformation campaigns,\u201d the Virginia Democrat wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy000d3b6ma8u45cwp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has requested comment from CISA on its response to the letter.  <s\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy000e3b6mnbprnnpe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some in the election community<strong> <\/strong>would also like to see CISA do more to combat falsehoods.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy000f3b6me5bcjf2i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI would like to see more a concerted effort from CISA on domestic information that affects election infrastructure,\u201d an executive at a voting equipment company, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, told CNN. Voting vendors have faced violent threats over false claims that their machines rigged the 2020 election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymy000g3b6mrtwkwpid@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The executive pointed to recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/22\/politics\/election-officials-misinformation\/index.html\">viral falsehoods<\/a> that voting machines had flipped votes in multiples states. What if a group of Americans spread those lies on a national scale and created chaos?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000h3b6mx14szjv2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf that does happen, if CISA is really focused on foreign malign influence, who is going to fight back against a coordinated effort?\u201d the executive wondered.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000i3b6mcutlt27i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has requested comment from CISA on its response to the recent spate of baseless voting machine claims.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000k3b6mlgtwfuv7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Four years after the 2020 election, when false claims of voter fraud fueled a violent effort to overturn the election, the information environment around elections has only grown more chaotic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000l3b6mxafcp4td@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Disinformation remains rampant online. But since 2021, under pressure from Republican lawmakers, the social media industry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/21\/politics\/election-social-media-misinformation-republicans\/index.html\">has pivoted<\/a> from many of the commitments, policies and tools it once embraced to help safeguard the peaceful transfer of democratic power.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000m3b6mvkfudlhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, platforms including Meta, Twitter and YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/election-2020-misinformation#h_6b03c51022c2276b8d6e63697d16ddf3\">suspended thousands of accounts<\/a> that spread election lies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/election-2020-misinformation#h_288117af7e810394003a6a63512656ab\">removed posts<\/a> glorifying the attack.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000n3b6m2sdjp6cl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under the ownership of billionaire Elon Musk, Twitter, now X, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/31\/politics\/election-officials-outmatched-elon-musk-misinformation\/index.html\">emerged<\/a> as one of the biggest sources of election conspiracy theories.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000o3b6mg4vtlacr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Election officials in battleground states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/31\/politics\/election-officials-outmatched-elon-musk-misinformation\/index.html\">have tried to relay<\/a> accurate information to Musk in hopes that he would stop spreading conspiracy theories about voting, to little avail.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000p3b6mqce12i5k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is an acute concern among some senior US officials that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/09\/politics\/white-house-hurricane-helene-misinformation\/index.html\">combination of false information and violent rhetoric<\/a> that complicated the federal response to Hurricane Helene in September could surface in a much more potent way on or after Election Day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000q3b6mltfv271w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt got a lot of us worried,\u201d a US official told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000s3b6mc27xfvxn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Easterly and her top elections security adviser, Cait Conley, have traveled the country to offer support, security advice and training to election officials from both parties. They point out that state and local election officials are the best sources for accurate information. CISA has advised states on setting up their own websites to debunk disinformation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000t3b6mxnp2mu4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CISA is one of multiple federal agencies involved in election security. The FBI investigates violent threats to election officials, while the Election Assistance Commission certifies voting equipment and educates voters about the process.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000u3b6myq8j8bh6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Directly countering false election narratives online and more consistently and forcefully promoting accurate information about voting are well within CISA\u2019s remit, election officials and experts say. Some election officials interviewed by CNN were skeptical about the federal government\u2019s ability to debunk election lies that are part of a broader rise of misinformation in America.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000x3b6mt1xac0l9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is such a larger conversation than election administration,\u201d said Stephen Richer, a top Republican election official in Arizona\u2019s Maricopa County who has faced violent threats for saying the 2020 election was secure. \u201cI tend to think that election administration and democracy is just a proxy war for the larger fight on an objective truth.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000y3b6mjaplsl35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an interview with CNN, Conley touted CISA\u2019s efforts to protect election officials from disinformation-fueled violence, in part by ramping up physical security resources to those officials\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz000z3b6mbi5an0ga@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSince January 2023, we\u2019ve conducted nearly 1,200 physical security assessments of election facilities,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z9nymz00103b6m6kpk6igr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In many respects, CISA has increased its election security efforts since 2020. The agency now has a team of former election officials who provide physical and cybersecurity services to election offices around the country.
