the death of multiple people in Australia this year.<\/p>\n<p>Burkholderia pseudomallei, a bacteria present in soil and water in tropical regions, can cause Melioidosis, a lung infection that may result in pneumonia or sepsis, and has a mortality rate of up to 50% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/p0727-Melioidosis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in some cases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024 alone, five people in Australia have died of the disease, which is contracted after contact with contaminated soil. <\/p>\n<p>Experts fear that natural disasters <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/14\/us-news\/dramatic-photos-reveal-how-hurricane-milton-reshaped-florida-cutting-some-iconic-beaches-in-half\/\">like hurricanes, storms<\/a> and other inclement weather could<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/12\/us-news\/hurricane-francine-aftermath-could-lead-to-rise-in-bacterial-infections-in-south-cdc-warns\/\"> increase the risk of its target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cases of melioidosis<\/a> have been found in the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and even Mississippi. In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified cases of the illness in patients from Texas, Minnesota, Kansas and Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/06\/cdc-warns-of-deadly-bacteria-with-50-fatality-rate-that-has-been-declared-endemic-to-the-us-gulf-coast\/\">declared an endemic<\/a> due to the spread of the disease in the Gulf Coast. At the time, experts said people with kidney and liver problems are at an increased risk of infection, which is sometimes asymptomatic.<\/p>\n<p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/melioidosis\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">symptoms<\/a> do occur, they include fever, headache, muscle pain, confusion, chest pain, trouble breathing and seizure.
