That\u2019s exactly what a team of scientists is suggesting in a new study.<\/p>\n<p>This research, led by Professor James McInerney and Dr. Alan Beavan from the School of Life Sciences at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Nottingham<\/a>, hints that evolution might not be as random as we\u2019ve long thought.<\/p>\n<p>Their research could have big implications for tackling issues like antibiotic resistance, diseases, and even climate change.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-evolution-genes-and-the-pangenome\">Evolution, genes, and the pangenome<\/h2>\n<p>So, what\u2019s this all about? The team analyzed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/meet-the-pangenome-the-clearest-snapshot-ever-taken-of-human-genomic-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the pangenome<\/a> \u2014 the complete set of genes within a species \u2014 to see if evolution follows any predictable paths. <\/p>\n<p>They wanted to know: Is evolution just a series of accidents, or is there a pattern influenced by a genome\u2019s history?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-pangenome\">What is the pangenome?<\/h2>\n<p>In simple terms, the pangenome is the complete set of all genes found within a species. <\/p>\n<p>It includes every gene present in all the different strains or individuals, covering both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/human-dna-secrets-revealed-by-genomic-time-machine-and-transposable-elements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">common genes<\/a> shared by everyone (the core genome) and the unique ones found only in some (the accessory genome). <\/p>\n<p>So even though individual members might have different genetic makeups, the pangenome represents the full genetic diversity that the species has.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing the pangenome allows researchers to identify which genes are essential for survival and which ones offer specific advantages, opening up possibilities for new medical and environmental applications.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-big-computing-power-required\">Big computing power required<\/h2>\n<p>The team used a machine learning approach called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/random-forest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Random Forest<\/a> to sift through a massive dataset of 2,500 complete genomes from a single bacterial species. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/how-machine-learning-can-help-us-protect-chimpanzees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Machine learning<\/a> algorithms like this are great at finding patterns that might be too complex or subtle for humans to detect on their own. <\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t a quick job \u2014 it took several hundred thousand hours of computer processing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-evolution-and-gene-families\">Evolution and \u201cgene families\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>First up, they created \u201cgene families\u201d from each gene in every genome. \u201cIn this way, we could compare like-with-like across the genomes,\u201d explained Dr. Maria Rosa Domingo-Sananes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntu.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nottingham Trent University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once they had these families sorted out, they focused on the genes and gene families inside the genomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that some gene families never turned up in a genome when a particular other gene family was already there,\u201d said Dr. Domingo-Sananes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd on other occasions, some genes were very much dependent on a different gene family being present.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hidden-gene-ecosystem-driving-evolution\">Hidden gene ecosystem driving evolution<\/h2>\n<p>In other words, they discovered an invisible ecosystem where genes either get along or clash with each other, making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/human-evolution-may-be-the-biggest-roadblock-to-solving-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evolution unpredictable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese interactions between genes make aspects of evolution somewhat predictable and furthermore, we now have a tool that allows us to make those predictions,\u201d added Dr. Domingo-Sananes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-paradigm-shift\">A paradigm shift<\/h2>\n<p>Professor McInerney, the lead author of the study, is excited about the possibilities, to say the least. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/missing-law-of-nature-explains-the-evolution-of-everything-that-exists-in-the-universe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">implications of this research<\/a> are nothing short of revolutionary,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy demonstrating that evolution is not as random as we once thought, we\u2019ve opened the door to an array of possibilities in synthetic biology, medicine, and environmental science.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-real-world-applications\">Real-world applications<\/h2>\n<p>This research isn\u2019t just about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/snails-defy-death-and-revive-through-evolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">understanding evolution<\/a> for curiosity\u2019s sake. It has real-world implications that could affect our lives in significant ways.<\/p>\n<p>But how could this affect us in practical terms? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom this work, we can begin to explore which genes \u2018support\u2019 an antibiotic resistance gene, for example,\u201d Dr. Beaven explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, if we are trying to eliminate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/umbrella-toxin-discovery-may-help-human-antibiotic-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antibiotic resistance<\/a>, we can target not just the focal gene, but we can also target its supporting genes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fighting-antibiotic-resistance\">Fighting antibiotic resistance<\/h2>\n<p>This approach could be a game-changer in the fight against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/antibiotic-resistance-increasing-enterococci-looming-global-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antibiotic-resistant bacteria<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>By understanding the network of genes that work together, scientists could develop more effective treatments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can use this approach to synthesize new kinds of genetic constructs that could be used to develop new drugs or vaccines,\u201d Dr. Beavan continued. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing what we now know has opened the door to a whole host of other discoveries.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-implications-for-climate-change\">Implications for climate change<\/h2>\n<p>The study\u2019s insights might also help in the fight against climate change. <\/p>\n<p>By engineering microorganisms that can capture carbon or break down pollutants, we could develop new tools to reduce our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/small-changes-in-diet-can-greatly-reduce-your-carbon-footprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-advancing-personalized-medicine-0\">Advancing personalized medicine<\/h2>\n<p>The predictability of gene interactions could also revolutionize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/your-microbiome-trillions-of-bacteria-unique-like-your-fingerprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personalized medicine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Imagine doctors being able to predict how a disease might progress in your body based on your genetic makeup, or which treatments would be most effective for you. <\/p>\n<p>This research could bring us one step closer to that reality.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-evolution-gene-manipulation-and-the-future\">Evolution, gene manipulation, and the future<\/h2>\n<p>To sum it all up, this new research is shaking up how we think about evolution.
