{"id":121704,"date":"2024-11-03T20:06:29","date_gmt":"2024-11-03T13:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=121704"},"modified":"2024-11-03T20:06:29","modified_gmt":"2024-11-03T13:06:29","slug":"how-durable-are-the-mrna-covid-vaccines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=121704","title":{"rendered":"How durable are the mRNA Covid vaccines?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\">In October, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2024\/s1023-covid-19-vaccine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> recommended that high-risk adults get a second updated Covid vaccine to bolster their protection against the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2024\/s1023-covid-19-vaccine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now recommends<\/a> that people ages 65 and up and those with weakened immune systems get a second dose of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/new-covid-vaccine-what-know-when-available-timing-rcna167121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024-25 vaccine<\/a> six months after their first dose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s not the first time the agency has advised or allowed for an additional dose for at-risk groups several months after the first. In the spring of 2022, officials authorized a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/acip\/evidence-to-recommendations\/covid-19-second-booster-dose-etr.html#:~:text=On%20March%2029%2C%202022%2C%20the,after%20receipt%20of%20a%20first\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second booster dose<\/a> after the initial fall rollout. The same pattern followed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2023\/04\/18\/fda-says-older-adults-and-the-immunocompromised-may-get-a-spring-booster-dose-of-covid-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spring of 2023<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/cdc-advisers-recommend-spring-covid-boosters-older-adults-rcna140871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spring of 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">No other vaccines are given at such a high frequency, but experts say there\u2019s no reason to believe that the vaccines \u2014 and in particular, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/nobel-medicine-goes-scientists-whose-work-enabled-creation-covid-mrna-rcna118332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mRNA vaccines<\/a> from Pfizer and Moderna \u2014 aren\u2019t effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Pfizer\u2019s and Moderna\u2019s vaccines were the first to use mRNA technology to induce immunity to a virus, an approach that proved critical in the early days of the pandemic because mRNA vaccines can be developed much faster than traditional vaccines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Despite the CDC recommending an additional shot, there\u2019s no evidence that the mRNA vaccines aren\u2019t working as expected, said Akiko Iwasaki, a professor of immunology at the Yale School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Rather, Iwasaki said, there may be something unique to this virus that is preventing people\u2019s bodies from maintaining high levels of immunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-03278-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A recent study<\/a> from researchers at Emory University found that so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/hybrid-immunity-people-covid-still-get-vaccinated-rcna1974\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hybrid immunity<\/a> \u2014 when a person has been both vaccinated and infected with the coronavirus at some point \u2014 failed to significantly establish certain long-lasting cells that secrete antibodies. That wasn\u2019t the case for people who had been vaccinated against the flu and tetanus, suggesting, Iwasaki said, that something different is happening with the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou would think that kind of hybrid immunity is going to be the most rigorous, and yet they did not see increases in these long-lived plasma cell numbers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and the former White House Covid-19 response coordinator, said there is some uncertainty about the durability of the mRNA vaccines compared to older vaccines technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cMaybe it is a little less durable,\u201d Jha said. \u201cI would say we don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The bigger issue, Jha said, is how rapidly the virus mutates, as well as its year-round presence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe problem here in my mind is not so much with the vaccine but much more with the virus,\u201d he said, adding that he supports the updated guidance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s what I\u2019ve actually been recommending to my own parents and it\u2019s what I have said publicly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The guidelines come amid concerns that waning vaccine immunity, particularly in older adults, may leave them more vulnerable to severe disease and hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTopping off your vaccine-induced immunity every six to 12 months is not a bad idea,\u201d said E. John Wherry, an immunologist at the University of Pennsylvania. The vaccine bolsters antibody levels, which are the first line of defense against the virus, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat makes it easier for the rest of your immune system to clean up and prevent that little bit of infection-causing disease,\u201d Wherry said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\"><strong>A rapidly changing virus<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe look at our flu vaccine strains every year and try to match them up as best we can,\u201d said Dr. Anna Durbin, an infectious disease physician and associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. \u201cIt\u2019s changing even faster with Covid \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s constantly mutating to get the advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One reason there aren\u2019t frequent boosters for a virus like measles is because it doesn\u2019t change as rapidly as the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA measles virus that you encounter today is very similar to a measles virus that you might have encountered five years ago or 10 years ago,\u201d Jha said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a perfect world, the Covid vaccines would be able to be updated much faster to match the strains in circulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBy the time we pick which strain of Covid we\u2019re going to switch the vaccine to, and by the time that vaccine is ready and rolled out, the virus has already mutated some,\u201d Durkin said. \u201cSo the thought really is, can we boost immunity that may not be a perfect match to the strain circulating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If that immunity is boosted with another dose of the vaccine, we\u2019ll be able to better protect those high-risk people, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jha doesn\u2019t expect the twice yearly vaccine to become a universal recommendation for all age groups, as the immune system of a 30-year-old is far more robust than that of an 80-year-old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmark\">\u201cUnless the virus gets more virulent,\u201d he said. \u201cWhich I don\u2019t really think is going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/durable-are-mrna-covid-vaccines-rcna178457\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that high-risk adults get a second updated Covid vaccine to bolster their protection against the virus.
