He calls Harris a problem-solver, goes in deep on how her price gouging plan could bring down the cost of groceries and how the intricacies of her proposal to have the federal government build more housing is an idea he\u2019d never thought of.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00043b6ml4gv8nei@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He still throws in Arkansas-spun laugh lines, like Donald Trump \u201cspreads blame like a John Deere spreads manure\u201d or a favorite bit he has about how the Republican nominee would take credit for this unseasonably sunny weather in the final campaign stretch but would blame Biden if it rained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00053b6mg33hm3v4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But speaking to CNN exclusively on his campaign bus \u2013 his only interview since starting what has become a marathon schedule that still has last-minute stops being added \u2013 Clinton said he also worries about what Trump\u2019s impact on politics means for what comes next, no matter who wins.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00063b6mpm2lzbly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat has surprised so many people \u2013 although I\u2019m sure this happened in the \u201830s throughout Europe, when they were considering things with fascism \u2013 a lot of people just can\u2019t believe how many voters in America agree that he doesn\u2019t make sense, agree that he\u2019s advocating things that would be bad, but somehow think that if the experience was good for them back then, it was magically his doing and everything was fine,\u201d Clinton said. \u201cSo, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00073b6mixkeyvah@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clinton campaigned 30 years ago on being a bridge to the 21st century. His wife was the one whose loss put Trump in the White House, in a way that burns him still.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00093b6meswmb5xg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now after spending the past few years celebrating 25th anniversaries of achievements such as the Good Friday agreement, as he\u2019s seen his own time in office bear out, the second youngest elected president ever is talking about securing his grandkids\u2019 future and holding up his big hands to show the joint problems and essential tremor that he says will keep him from hitting a 300-yard drive again.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000a3b6m12qnu3cw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over nearly three weeks straight of 10-hour days \u2013 which means he\u2019s had a much more active schedule than Harris, Trump, Tim Walz, JD Vance, Joe Biden or Barack Obama \u2013 Clinton is adamant in his speeches about his unique perspective as the only person on the planet who\u2019s done the job and personally knows both candidates on the ballot Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000b3b6m725w8haj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou did pretty well when I was president, and I think I\u2019m entitled to my opinion about who would be better,\u201d he often says, his soft Southern accent now with a permanent rasp.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000c3b6m0d8wcy87@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Standing in a church gym in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, he recounted a bit that he had read a few years ago about Dwight Eisenhower saying he worried how much longer the oldest continuous democracy could survive with all the effort it takes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000d3b6md2n26lzx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think we ought to say to President Eisenhower, \u2018We don\u2019t know how long we\u2019re going to make it either, but we\u2019re fixing to lengthen our stay in the land of the free and the home of the brave,\u201d Clinton said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000e3b6ma3rdmt4l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hours later, relaxed in a chair on a bright blue Harris-Walz bus, he considered what Obama, Biden, Walz and others have meant when they say that America might not survive another four years of Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000f3b6m5ofhh0a4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think you have to look at what the definition of \u2018survive\u2019 is,\u201d Clinton said. \u201cYou can put me on a breathing tube tonight, but it wouldn\u2019t be surviving like I\u2019m surviving now. And the same thing\u2019s true in politics. Clinton\u2019s visit \u201ccements something for me going forward,\u201d 25-year-old Berrien County Commissioner Chokwe Pitchford told a few hundred people in the patio of a microbrew pub in Benton Harbor on a Wednesday afternoon, referring both to boosting local pride and Democrats winning elections there.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000k3b6moxaf0hu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clinton\u2019s winning 1992 and 1996 electoral maps wouldn\u2019t even make sense in a Democratic fever dream in 2024: He won Arizona and Georgia one time each, but also Missouri, Kentucky and Louisiana in both races. Virginia was the only one of the now reliably blue states out of reach for Clinton.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000l3b6mo2f6sa84@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Technology and culture have led to a lot of changes in the country. Imagine if America hadn\u2019t signed on, hadn\u2019t bailed out Mexico when the peso was failing, he argued: Mexico might have collapsed, probably another million undocumented immigrants would have come over the border, the upheavals in imports and exports would have rocked the American economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000n3b6memhncae6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then again, Clinton said, he was \u201cgobsmacked\u201d that companies that said they\u2019d pay to help with the transition never did. And he blamed the Republicans who rode an anti-Clinton, anti-NAFTA wave in 1994 for never getting the universal health care and job retraining programs he had envisioned as the other side of the agreement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000o3b6mppkcoorg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe government should have seen that we had a public stake in minimizing the inevitable losses,\u201d Clinton said. \u201cThe benefits, no matter how great, are dispersed. problem is: Are you betraying your progressive principles every time you make a deal?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk000x3b6mehjngixn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Learn from his mistakes on trade and other deals with Republicans, Clinton urged Harris.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" \u201cYou need a better strategy than we had to make it OK for us to make principled deals with the Republicans,\u201d he said, shaking his head as he reflected on how he didn\u2019t think to do that for Democrats, \u201cwe can\u2019t go around saying, as I do all the time, that what we have in common is more important than our interesting differences \u2013 which I deeply believe as a matter of biology and I believe it as a matter of psychology and I\u2019m certain it\u2019s true as a matter of economics,\u201d Clinton said, \u201cand at the same time basically try to make mincemeat out of the electorate and only go after this little piece and leave that little piece alone.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" while the economic, social and psychological differences are real, Clinton said, some of the voters backing Trump need to be more honest about what\u2019s driving them.\n    <\/p>\n<p data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s also true that if you grew up like I did in a White working class family in the South and felt that the only people who were \u2018below\u2019 you, if you will, were Black, and you might have known that the only way to hold on here was not to have too much progress of Black folks and what they\u2019re allowed to get,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00133b6msle6j6n0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s only one living former president missing in this race: George W. Bush. Many people think they know where he stands on Trump, even though he has refused to say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00143b6mgsmayl4l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clinton, who has his own long history with the Bush family, defended the 43rd president\u2019s choice to stick to his rule of avoiding campaign politics in his post-presidency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00153b6mwaavrlsn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFirst of all, he\u2019s spoken up, I think, more than he\u2019s gotten credit for, and he takes every opportunity that I\u2019ve seen to talk about how important immigration is and how we can\u2019t survive without it,\u201d Clinton said, leaving hanging in the air the implication of that contrast to Trump\u2019s nativism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00163b6m80j5d8tk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bush really did want to get out of politics, Clinton said, before dropping in passing that \u201che likes Colin Allred,\u201d who happens to be Bush\u2019s local congressman in Texas and is trying for a potentially Democratic majority-preserving upset Tuesday against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. Clinton said Bush told him that directly: \u201cOh, yeah. He\u2019ll tell anybody that, that he\u2019s a good guy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00173b6m07wb68lm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bush left a congratulatory voicemail for Allred, when he first won election as the congressman from his home district in 2018, and they met in person once, but the former president has not gotten involved in the Senate race.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00183b6mdcb36xsv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe also knows, beginning with our relationship, it\u2019s very different when you\u2019re out of political life, when there is no competition, no consequence,\u201d Clinton said. \u201cAnd I think he believes that since he was a proud Republican all those years, it\u2019s enough for him to make clear what he believes with all this, without giving up the party he\u2019s been with all his life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk00193b6mx1mgztze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When read Clinton\u2019s comments, a person close to Bush told CNN, \u201cPresident Bush has indeed moved on from presidential politics, but he has been working quietly and diligently to keep the Senate in GOP control.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30pq3t000013b6mivp96p8h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The person declined to comment on whether that work included efforts on behalf of Cruz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk001b3b6megskt1zi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clinton\u2019s case for Harris is looped through with his own experience: The reason he\u2019s so sure Americans will soon start feeling better about the economy is because that\u2019s what happened in between Democrats\u2019 devastating 1994 midterms after he made huge cuts to the shrink the national debt, and how they felt about the surging economy years later. Standing in Michigan, reflecting on Arab American politics in the state sent him off on an extended riff through history and emotional understanding, building up to the missed crowning achievement that might have gotten him the Nobel Peace Prize and almost certainly would have saved many of the lives that have been lost without it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk001e3b6mr1vkf5go@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe only time Yasser Arafat didn\u2019t tell me the truth is when he promised me he was going to accept the peace deal that we had worked out,\u201d he said, starting to tick through the details of the would-be agreement and the history of its approval by the Israeli Cabinet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk001f3b6mzlrx8isu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI can hardly talk about this,\u201d Clinton said, audibly choking up for a moment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk001g3b6mos5k32zi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHow about we stop funding it?\u201d a woman called out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm30mwuuk001h3b6m54d4bvgm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He kept going.
