But it turns out one pose, in particular, may show more than your flexibility. How long you can stand on one leg may be an important indicator of your health and how well you are aging, according to new research.<\/p>\n<p>A small Mayo Clinic study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0310764\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:PLOS One;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><em><u>PLOS One<\/u><\/em><\/a> looked at 40 healthy, independent people over the age of 50\u2014half of whom were under 65; the other half were 65 and older. Researchers used the following tests to assess age-related decline as well as differences between sexes.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"caas-list caas-list-bullet\">\n<li>\n<p>Grip strength: A handheld device was used to measure upper body strength.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Knee strength: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/fitness\/a38016005\/exercises-for-knees\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Knee extension exercises;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><u>Knee extension exercises<\/u><\/a> assessed lower body strength.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Gait: Participants walked at their own pace on a designated path while a motion analysis system captured their movements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Balance: Participants stood on plates that measured balance during four different scenarios: on both feet with eyes open, with eyes closed, and on the dominant and non-dominant leg with eyes open. Participants could hold the leg they weren\u2019t standing on where they wanted.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Out of the four tests, researchers found that how long someone maintained their balance while standing on one leg showed \u201cthe highest rate of decline with age,\u201d per Mayo Clinic. In other words, the results showed that the amount of time in which a person can stand on a dominant and non-dominant leg significantly decreased with age\u2014and had a larger decline than gait and muscle strength.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, researchers determined that the duration a person can stand on a single leg declined at the rate of 2.2 seconds per decade in the non-dominant leg, while doing the same at the rate of 1.7 seconds per decade in the dominant leg. Researchers noted that these findings were true for all genders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/fitness\/workouts\/a34045827\/best-balance-exercises\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Balance;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><u>Balance<\/u><\/a> is an important measure because, in addition to muscle strength, it requires input from vision, the vestibular system [a sensory system in the inner ear that helps maintain balance], and the somatosensory systems [part of the nervous system that allows people to perceive sensations from the body, like touch, pressure, pain, temperature, and movement],\u201d said Kenton Kaufman, Ph.D., senior author of the study and director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fnewsnetwork.mayoclinic.org%2Fdiscussion%2Fmayo-clinic-study-what-standing-on-one-leg-can-tell-you%2F&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.prevention.com%2Fhealth%2Fa62778051%2Fstanding-on-one-leg-balance-age-health-study%2F\" data-i13n=\"elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp rapid-with-clickid etailiffa-link\"><u>statement<\/u><\/a>. \u201cChanges in balance are noteworthy. If you have poor balance, you\u2019re at risk of falling, whether or not you\u2019re moving. Falls are a severe health risk with serious consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement pointed out that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7235a1.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:leading cause of injuries;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">leading cause of injuries<\/a> among adults who are 65 and older is unintentional falls\u2014and most falls among older adults result from a loss of balance.<\/p>\n<h2>The bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>This research shows how balance may be used as a measurement of age, but it\u2019s not the first study to do so. A <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/56\/17\/975\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:June 2022 study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><u>June 2022 study<\/u><\/a> affirmed that the ability to balance is linked to a longer life, finding that those who failed to stand on one leg for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/fitness\/a40395718\/10-second-balance-test-may-indicate-how-long-you-live\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:10-second balance test;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><u>10-second balance test<\/u><\/a> were associated with an 84% increased risk of death over the next seven years.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that you can take steps to prevent this with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/fitness\/a20443104\/6-ways-to-improve-your-balance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:balance exercises;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"><u>balance exercises<\/u><\/a>. \u201cFor example, by standing on one leg, you can train yourself to coordinate your muscle and vestibular responses to maintain correct balance. If you can stand on one leg for 30 seconds, you are doing well,\u201d Dr. Kaufman said in the statement from Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t use it, you lose it. If you use it, you maintain it,\u201d Dr. Kaufman continued. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to do.
