She was certain to have mental or physical disabilities or both,\u00a0Tasha\u2019s doctor\u00a0told the couple. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>It was a little late in the pregnancy, but the doctor said he knew someone who would perform an abortion, according to Sam Anderson\u2019s interview with Cowboy State Daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Sam scowled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0was also appalled, but she sensed her husband\u2019s tension and wondered if he\u2019d make a scene. He didn\u2019t, and she was proud of him for that, she told Cowboy State Daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Sam asked the doctor to leave the room. Then he turned to his wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cIs this going to be an issue for you \u2014 if she does have physical or mental disabilities?\u201d Sam asked\u00a0Tasha. \u201cAre you going to love the kid any different?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0said no, she\u2019d love that baby no matter what.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cPerfect. We\u2019re on the same page,\u201d said Sam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>When the doctor returned to the room, Tasha\u00a0announced that abortion was not an option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cNo matter how she\u2019s created and how she\u2019s born, that\u2019s God\u2019s intention for her,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>It was harder for Sam to hold in his emotions during that visit than it was for\u00a0Tasha, he told Cowboy State Daily. A former addict and a born-again Christian for the past six years, Sam had to fight to keep his former, impulsive self from bubbling to the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The pair went to their car and prayed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Now a year and a half later, they are smitten with their baby girl Jamesyn, whom they describe as a reminder of how precious life is, and how blessed they are even when they\u00a0feel\u00a0utterly helpless. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>32 Weeks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>At\u00a0Tasha\u2019s 32nd\u00a0week of pregnancy in May 2023, medical professionals dilated\u00a0her\u00a0so she could give birth. Nausea and dizziness wracked her body and brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The professionals in the room realized she had preeclampsia, a serious condition involving high blood pressure. They dosed her with medicine and urged her to push.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The baby\u2019s heart rate dropped, so the doctors pivoted and rushed\u00a0Tasha\u00a0to an emergency cesarian section, only to find that\u00a0Tasha\u2019s placenta had grown through her uterus, she had endometriosis, and she was hemorrhaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>It was a\u00a0hurricane\u00a0of things that can go wrong during pregnancy and delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Doctors pulled out a 2-pound baby girl: Jamesyn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The birth, usually a precious moment for mothers, tumbled into other events.\u00a0Tasha\u00a0lost more than half her blood. (Courtesy Tasha Anderson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>1 Month Old<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The baby\u00a0lay\u00a0in an incubator\u00a0post-surgery. Neither\u00a0Tasha\u00a0nor Sam could touch her for the first month of her life. Doctors struggled to give Jamesyn the care she needed because the industry just doesn\u2019t make medical instruments that small, for that unique of a procedure, said\u00a0Tasha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0was finally allowed to hold Jamesyn against her chest when the baby was about a month old and had bulked up to three pounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The medical hell didn\u2019t stop. Jamesyn required a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine until she was 2 months old. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>She required blood transfusions and multiple surgeries \u2013 attempts to stretch her esophagus to attach it to her stomach. Even once doctors made that attachment, the baby always had recurring problems breathing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Doctors didn\u2019t know where to inject her IVs because her tiny veins ran in unpredictable patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>She remained in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the first four months of her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>5 Months Old<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>At 5 months old, Jamesyn was hospitalized for one of her many surgeries, and\u00a0Tasha\u00a0walked into her hospital room to find her ribs pluming and collapsing. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Doctors had tried to insert an IV into a vein in her neck but her veins were so unpredictable that the fluid shot straight into her lungs instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>She was drowning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Medical personnel realized what was happening and pulled the tube.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cThat was our first instance of almost losing her,\u201d said\u00a0Tasha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>It was also around that time that an infection spread through Jamesyn\u2019s left hand, and she came within an hour of having to have it amputated. Doctors cut out dead tissue and plugged in shark cartilage to replace it. Her hand is large, scarred and weak, but she can now bend and move it, said\u00a0Tasha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Jamesyn\u2019s surgeon calls her \u201cMurphy,\u201d because anything that can go wrong with her procedures, will. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Yet, the baby girl has been a fighter from the start. Even as a newborn, she threw up her fists and shot looks of disapproval at nurses prodding her. Now a year and a half old with a mouth full of teeth, she flashes her loved ones with a Julia Roberts smile. She\u2019s fought through every surgery, every infection, every bout of starvation from a digestive lapse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>She\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.givesendgo.com\/babyJamesyn\" title=\"https:\/\/www.givesendgo.com\/babyJamesyn\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">scheduled Monday<\/a>\u00a0for what her parents hope will be one last surgery \u2014 her 28<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0\u2014 to seal a tunnel that leaks her food and saliva into her lungs, starving and infecting her at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>First Life Flight<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Jamesyn\u2019s first of two life flights out of Lander happened April 4, when she was 11 months old. She couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Once in Denver, her body started shutting down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>While doctors bustled and barked, one doctor in the group appeared intensely focused on Jamesyn\u2019s midsection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>He looked at the girl, shoved her stomach upward with his hands and plunged an IV through her abdominal muscles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>It was a wild gamble, on a baby whose veins usually can\u2019t be found without an ultrasound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cHe basically took a blind shot at her but was able to get an IV in right away,\u201d said\u00a0Tasha, of Dr. Matt Gollub. \u201cAfter that, she was able to kind of start recovering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0didn\u2019t know how controversial the move was until the days following the event, when doctors and nurses would come into Jamesyn\u2019s room, look at her belly and murmur, \u201cI can\u2019t believe he did that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>That same doctor has saved Jamesyn\u2019s life a total of three times, said Tasha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>On another occasion, Jamesyn had RSV, norovirus and pneumonia all at once. (Courtesy Tasha Anderson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The Darkest Day<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The Anderson family has developed a prayer channel that has grown\u00a0beyond family and friends, to people living as far away as Korea and Germany.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0called on them in late August, during the bleakest of Jamesyn\u2019s struggles.\u00a0She had\u00a0lost hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Facing still more procedures, Jamesyn became depressed. Her light went out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cShe was aware enough to know she was back in the hospital,\u201d said\u00a0Tasha. \u201cShe wouldn\u2019t smile, wouldn\u2019t look at you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>For\u00a0Tasha, it boded disaster. Jamesyn\u2019s joy and spunk\u00a0had\u00a0buoyed her through freak circumstances. The mother didn\u2019t know how her daughter would survive without those.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0sent out a request to her prayer chain, begging them to pray that Jamesyn\u2019s\u00a0spark\u00a0would come back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>The next morning, the little \u201cspitfire\u201d woke smiling, the light back in her eyes,\u00a0Tasha\u00a0recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Well, Half Right<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>It\u2019s been a long journey. Jamesyn is taking her food directly through a tube in her stomach, after continuing digestive struggles prompted extreme vomiting in July.\u00a0She was 14 months old and only weighed nine pounds.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>She once endured a two-week-long induced coma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Her infections, quarantines and hospitalizations almost never end. She suffers withdrawals when she comes off medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Jamesyn never had the strength to crawl but now at nearly 18 months old, she can \u201ccruise\u201d walk. She can\u2019t talk, but cognitively, \u201cshe\u2019s right on point,\u201d said\u00a0Tasha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Sam is working multiple jobs to carry the financial load.\u00a0Tasha\u00a0wakes at odd hours to administer treatments to her baby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha said her obstetrician in Colorado was half right: there was no doubt Jamesyn would have disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>But neither\u00a0Tasha\u00a0nor Sam regret having their little girl. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cI can\u2019t even imagine life without her,\u201d said\u00a0Tasha. \u201cShe\u2019s taught me so much about strength and resilience, as she goes into these surgeries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>When Jamesyn returns to her acute care team in Colorado, everyone lights up. Staffers have personally approached\u00a0Tasha\u00a0to say that she&#8217;s changed their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cShe\u2019s a favorite because she has such a great personality, and they know her to be such a fighter,\u201d said\u00a0Tasha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0can always tell when her toddler is on the brink of a recovery, because she\u2019ll get annoyed and start throwing stuff from her crib \u2013 like she\u2019s willing herself to get better.\u00a0A few miracles have happened along the way, like a recovery from a low platelet count that no doctor could explain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Tasha\u00a0has seen a full range of heartbreak in the NICU, from a parent who\u2019d only been there a week having a breakdown at the strain, to parents losing their child, and hosting a family funeral right there in the wing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cIt\u2019s so heart-wrenching,\u201d she said. But the Anderson family has always approached Jamesyn\u2019s room prayerfully, gratefully, as if every moment with her is an undeserved privilege, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>Sam and\u00a0Tasha Anderson\u00a0feel\u00a0nothing but helpless in that room. But people only really understand where they stand as human beings when they\u2019re reduced to helplessness, said Sam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\"><span>\u201cJamesyn has helped me find that. Helped me understand what true, unconditional love is.
