For years we\u2019ve been told that getting at least 10,000 steps is crucial to maintaining our health, but how did that number get chosen and is it really accurate?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>That\u2019s what we \u2014 Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson, hosts of <a href=\"https:\/\/shows.acast.com\/am-i-doing-it-wrong\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"HuffPost\u2019s \u201cAm I Doing It Wrong?\u201d podcast\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6727aab3e4b0c08c52a58591\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/shows.acast.com\/am-i-doing-it-wrong\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HuffPost\u2019s \u201cAm I Doing It Wrong?\u201d podcast<\/a> \u2014 discussed with Heather Milton, an exercise physiologist at NYU Langone Health in New York, when she stopped by our studio to give us tips and tricks for exercising better.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cWe always hear about 10,000 steps, and I actually read that that number is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/10000-steps-a-day-or-fewer-2019071117305\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"this pedometer that was designed in Japan\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6727aab3e4b0c08c52a58591\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/10000-steps-a-day-or-fewer-2019071117305\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" rel=\"noopener\">this pedometer that was designed in Japan<\/a> [in the 1960\u2032s],\u201d Michelson said. \u201cThe [Japanese character] for 10,000 looks like a person walking, so&#8230; it just sort of became known for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Even though that specific figure wasn\u2019t based on medical or scientific research, it has remained the benchmark for our daily step goal for decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cThere has been more recent literature that looked at [10,000 steps] per day, and how that\u2019s related to 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity per day,\u201d Milton told us. \u201cThe idea is if you\u2019re getting the right intensity of that [10,000-step] walk, then you\u2019re getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physicalactivity\/basics\/age-chart.html#:~:text=Get%20at%20least%20150%20minutes,aerobic%20physical%20activity%20a%20week.&amp;text=Get%20at%20least%202%20days,include%20all%20major%20muscle%20groups.\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"CDC and ACSM recommended amount of aerobic exercise per day\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6727aab3e4b0c08c52a58591\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physicalactivity\/basics\/age-chart.html#:~:text=Get%20at%20least%20150%20minutes,aerobic%20physical%20activity%20a%20week.&amp;text=Get%20at%20least%202%20days,include%20all%20major%20muscle%20groups.\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC and ACSM recommended amount of aerobic exercise per day<\/a>, because it equates to about 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>However, not all steps are created equal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re counting steps, does that mean like I got up and walked to get water and came back? That\u2019s probably not moderate intensity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>That\u2019s why Milton emphasized that in order for us to get the most out of our walks, our pace should be brisk enough to keep us from being able to easily chat while we\u2019re doing it, which she referred to as \u201cthe talk test.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cIf you and I were trying to have a conversation, would you only be able to answer \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019 to my questions? Or could we be chatting like this?\u201d she asked. \u201cThere\u2019s a threshold dose or intensity dose that then lends towards increasing your health, and if we\u2019re looking at heart rate ranges, [that\u2019s] about 60&#8230; 64 to 76 technically&#8230; percent of your max heart rate. That zone is your moderate intensity zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Aside from intensity, different step counts can provide different results based on other factors, like age. A <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2734709\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2019 study\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6727aab3e4b0c08c52a58591\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2734709\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 study<\/a> involving 16,741 women who ranged in age from 62 to 101 found that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/accolades.utk.edu\/2020\/07\/23\/10000-steps-a-day-to-stay-healthy-is-a-myth\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"4,400 steps a day was associated with a 41% reduction in mortality\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6727aab3e4b0c08c52a58591\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/accolades.utk.edu\/2020\/07\/23\/10000-steps-a-day-to-stay-healthy-is-a-myth\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"noopener\">4,400 steps a day was associated with a 41% reduction in mortality<\/a> compared with walking 2,700 steps a day, [and walking] around 7,500 steps was associated with a 65% reduction.\u201d Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(21)00302-9\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"study showed progressively decreasing risk of mortality for people under 60\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6727aab3e4b0c08c52a58591\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(21)00302-9\/fulltext\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"noopener\">study showed progressively decreasing risk of mortality for people under 60<\/a> when they logged 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Because there\u2019s so much to consider when attempting to use step count to determine our fitness, Milton suggested we stop concentrating so specifically on our steps and instead focus on a different number: 30.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Not only is 30 the number of minutes of moderate activity we want to aim for each day, it\u2019s also the maximum number of minutes we should allow ourselves to remain seated or sedentary at any given time during the day. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cSedentary time is a whole other risk factor for health,\u201d she noted. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Inactivity can <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/healthrisksofaninactivelifestyle.html\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"contribute to countless medical issues\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6727aab3e4b0c08c52a58591\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/healthrisksofaninactivelifestyle.html\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"noopener\">contribute to countless medical issues<\/a>, including obesity, high blood pressure, certain cancers and mental health issues, so the less sedentary we are, the better our health and well-being may be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cThe sweet spot for breaking up sedentary time [is moving] every 30 minutes,\u201d Milton said. \u201cIf you\u2019re walking, your steps are contributing to that [and that\u2019s] helping your health from a different domain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>That\u2019s why she likes using steps as a \u201csimple tool \u2014 an objective measure of if [my client] got some activity or didn\u2019t that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cSo, for the general population, if you have a Fitbit or another device that\u2019s counting your steps, you can see how low they are,\u201d she said. \u201cThen you can set goals for increasing it over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>If we see a meager end-of-the-day count, that could indicate we were sitting or sedentary for much of the day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201c10,000 [steps] may not be what you want to set [your goal to],\u201d Milton said. \u201cIt may just be to increase it by 200 [steps]. Then you can increase slowly over time, so you\u2019re getting more active time. It may not be structured exercise, but it is physical activity.
