Blomdahl, who lives in Svalbard\u2019s largest city of Longyearbyen, is one of about 2,500 residents in the region. Here, colorful cabins contrast colossal ice cap backdrops and vibrant celestial phenomena light the sky.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4p000e3b6k578hib3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blomdahl moved to Svalbard in 2015 and documents her unique life to millions of fascinated social media followers. She has now captured her home\u2019s serenity, sparkling in shades of blue, in a new photobook titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dk.com\/uk\/book\/9780744095098-life-on-svalbard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life on Svalbard<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4p000f3b6kp3pi804x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you live here, you really get immersed in it; the quiet and peaceful nature,\u201d Blomdahl, a former hospitality worker turned content creator, told CNN, \u201cAnd every day being so close to the nature; it\u2019s infatuating.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4p000g3b6k3uuhzpxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For all its natural beauty, Svalbard is much more than a pretty place. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/27\/world\/snow-crabs-oil-norway-svalbard-climate-intl\/index.html#:~:text=Under%20the%20Svalbard%20Treaty%20of,including%20fish%2C%20oil%20and%20gas.\">rich resources<\/a>, such as fish, gas, and mineral deposits, have made it a topic of economic and diplomatic dispute in the past, and it now serves as a flourishing global hub for economic activities and scientific research. For those just coming for a spell, it\u2019s a bucket list tourist destination.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4p000h3b6klootdt0p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But as Blomdahl knows, life in Svalbard isn\u2019t easy. It\u2019s going to be crazy or wild or just a regular day,\u201d said Blomdahl, \u201cBut a regular day here is so different; it\u2019s drinking coffee with Northern Lights, or midnight sun, or reindeers.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4q000j3b6kpmu0yhak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those are common sentiments within Svalbard\u2019s community \u2014 the extreme conditions, while enchanting, means people don\u2019t stick around the area by accident. People from around 50 countries <a href=\"https:\/\/en.visitsvalbard.com\/visitor-information\/about-svalbard#:~:text=Who%20lives%20in%20Svalbard%3F,from%20around%2050%20other%20countries.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reside<\/a> there, working in areas such as scientific research and seasonal tourism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4q000k3b6k99w5c5yq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What moves someone to search for a home in such a remote corner of the world? According to <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/120336\/extreme-why-some-people-thrive-limits-interview#:~:text=Emma%20Barrett:%C2%A0Most%20people%20are%20motivated%20by%20more%20than%20one%20thing.%20Some%20of%20the%20more%20common%20include%20the%20desire%20to%20master%20skills%20and%20achieve%20high%20levels%20of%20performance%2C%20challenging%20the%20limits%20of%20their%20ability%2C%20as%20a%20social%20experience%20and%20as%20escape%20from%20personal%20problems%20or%20everyday%20tedium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behavioral science experts<\/a>, many people who seek out extreme conditions may be motivated by desires to challenge the limits of their physical and psychological abilities, escape personal problems or everyday tedium, or simply for the thrill.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4q000l3b6kktroavci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Blomdahl, a glimpse of Svalbard\u2019s unparalleled scenery was all she needed to forsake her corporate ambitions in England and Sweden and opt to live what she describes in her book as a \u201cnature-connected life marked by a slower pace.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4q000m3b6k0s2rdgl2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEverything up here is so pure and so beautiful,\u201d Blomdahl said, \u201cyou think that it\u2019s some sort of magic because it\u2019s so unreal.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div her social media channels, Blomdahl shows viewers firsthand how Svalbard\u2019s environment shapes her everyday life. For example, not only is it necessary to carry polar bear protection gear when traveling outside designated settlements, it\u2019s legally mandated. In one striking image in her book, she is shown sporting a firearm on her back as she and her dog stand far from the settlements. Polar night runs from mid-November to the end of January, when the sun doesn\u2019t rise above the horizon. Midnight sun, which lasts about 18 weeks between April and August, is when the sun doesn\u2019t set below the horizon. These periods of constant light and day-long dark can take a toll on the body and mind. Blomdahl recalled how friends, disoriented by polar night, found themselves heading to work in the middle of the night, instead of the equally dark daytime hours.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4q000r3b6kztbfvo6l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Such abnormal living conditions can have pervasive effects on people\u2019s health. Despite an overall positive outlook on health and quality of life in Svalbard, polar night and midnight sun can disrupt sleep-wake cycles, blood protein levels, and lead to increased risks of chronic disease. Despite taking supplements, Blomdahl says she noticed a drop in her vitamin D levels, which support immune health and brain cell activity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4q000s3b6k5eqeddgz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nonetheless, Blomdahl still says polar night is \u201cone of the best times of year,\u201d where she can \u201cbecome one with the darkness.\u201d She enjoys the tranquility during that period, but emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and staying active during what otherwise could be a lethargic season.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24l4q000t3b6kx8exm8w9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYour mindset is so powerful. I see these dark days as something cozy,\u201d Blomdahl said, \u201cI think it\u2019s very much up to each and every person to try to create that routine and that mindset.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div
