But there&#8217;s one really, really big thing to which this doesn&#8217;t seem to apply, at all. That&#8217;s the Universe itself, getting bigger and bigger all the time.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>According to our physical descriptions of how the cosmos should behave, that growth should be slowing down. Instead, measurements show it is speeding up, driven by a mysterious force known as  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-energy\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73030\" data-postid=\"141918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dark energy<\/a>. And it&#8217;s a dilly of a <i>huge<\/i> pickle.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s something in the Universe that might explain it, some scientists argue: the massive, dense, growing concentrations of matter we call  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/black-holes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73020\" data-postid=\"141918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">black holes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If black holes contain dark energy, they can couple to and grow with the expanding universe, causing its growth to accelerate,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1062904\">says astrophysicist Kevin Croker<\/a> of Arizona State University. &#8220;We can&#8217;t get the details of how this is happening, but we can see evidence that it is happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t know what it is, but calculations suggest whatever is responsible for the accelerated expansion it makes up an <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/the-universe-is-expanding-faster-these-days-and-dark-energy-is-responsible-so-what-is-dark-energy\/\">estimated 70 percent<\/a> of the matter-energy distribution of the Universe.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>What we see as expansion today also may not have always been consistent.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141921\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141921\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/expansion.jpg\" alt=\"Black Holes Implicated in The Mystery of The Accelerating Universe Expansion\" width=\"642\" height=\"362\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/expansion.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/expansion-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A diagram showing the two distinct epochs of accelerated expansion. Just after the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/big-bang\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73033\" data-postid=\"141918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Big Bang<\/a>, the Universe went from nothing to a fairly large something in a fraction of a second. Then it grew relatively slowly for a time, until about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualreviews.org\/content\/journals\/10.1146\/annurev.astro.46.060407.145243\">5 billion years ago<\/a> when expansion became dominated by dark energy.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Whatever caused the Universe to initially inflate, slow, and accelerate had to overcome the extreme gravity contained within a cosmic sum of matter squeezed into one spot.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you ask yourself the question, &#8216;Where in the later Universe do we see gravity as strong as it was at the beginning of the Universe?&#8217; the answer is at the center of black holes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1062904\">explains physicist Gregory Tarl\u00e9<\/a> of the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s possible that what happened during inflation runs in reverse, the matter of a massive star becomes dark energy again during gravitational collapse \u2013 like a little Big Bang played in reverse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The idea that black holes might be implicated in dark energy emerges from a relatively recently proposed concept called <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ac2fad\">cosmological coupling<\/a>, a proposal that emerges from attempts to resolve  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/black-holes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73020\" data-postid=\"141918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">black hole<\/a> weirdness with interpretations of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/general-relativity\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73026\" data-postid=\"141918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">general relativity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>According to the hypothesis, the extreme distortions of space associated with black holes is linked, or coupled, to the expansion of the Universe. As the Universe grows, so too do black holes; and as black holes grow, so does the Universe.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Last year, a team of researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/radical-theory-proposes-black-holes-are-the-source-of-mysterious-dark-energy\">published a paper<\/a> demonstrating the plausibility of cosmological coupling by studying the supermassive black holes at the centers of &#8216;dead&#8217; galaxies. These are galaxies that have exhausted their fuel, both for growing new stars, and feeding the growth of the supermassive black hole.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Any growth demonstrated by the black holes in these galaxies could therefore not be attributed to normal growth mechanisms, but cosmological coupling. Finding there were indeed signs of growth, the team felt their idea was validated.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Explainer: First evidence black holes are source of dark energy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gjwxnoPoEHQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In a new paper, Croker and his colleagues have investigated the link between black holes and dark energy \u2013 not as the black hole grows, but when it is born. They used the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dark_Energy_Spectroscopic_Instrument\">Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument<\/a> to study the formation rate of black holes from the core collapse of massive stars at the end of their lifespan, much later in the lifetime of the Universe than when the supermassive black holes formed, and compared this with the expansion of the Universe.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The two phenomena were consistent with each other \u2013 as new black holes were made in the deaths of massive stars, the amount of dark energy in the Universe increased in the right way,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1062904\">says physicist Duncan Farrah<\/a> of the University of Hawai&#8217;i.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This makes it more plausible that black holes are the source of dark energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>According to the theory of cosmological coupling, black holes convert normal matter into dark energy.
