Kennedy Jr.  waded into another scientific debate on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/03\/politics\/rfk-jr-fluoride-trump\/index.html\"> Saturday<\/a> by saying Donald Trump\u2019s administration would advise that fluoride be removed from the country\u2019s water supplies if the former president wins Tuesday\u2019s presidential election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj003s3b5v7kj1o34w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOn January 20, the Trump White House will advise all U.S\u200b. water systems to remove fluoride from public water. Fluoride is an industrial waste associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid disease,\u201d Kennedy, a former independent presidential candidate, wrote in a social media post.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj003t3b5v0xiw417j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has suggested that Kennedy, who was an environmental lawyer before entering politics, would oversee a health portfolio in his next administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj003u3b5vqykww33r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At a campaign rally in New York last week, Trump said he would let Kennedy \u201cgo wild on health,\u201d \u201cgo wild on the food\u201d and \u201cgo wild on medicines.\u201d At a rally in Michigan on Friday, Trump said Kennedy would \u201chave a big role in health care\u201d and has \u201csome views that I happen to agree with very strongly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj003v3b5vffp9li9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what health experts are weighing as the public health practice of adding fluoride to America\u2019s water supply comes under increased scrutiny.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj003x3b5vx1k0ylds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fluoride is found naturally in the environment in water and rocks, as well as in some foods. The mineral can also be a byproduct of some\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6195894\/#:~:text=Fluoride%20is%20the%20ionic%20form,to%20determine%20the%20population%20needs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">industry<\/a>,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluoridation\/faq\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the CDC.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj003z3b5vhgkw4qu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A federal judge in September <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/25\/health\/epa-fluoride-drinking-water\/index.html\">ordered<\/a> the US Environmental Protection Agency to take additional measures to regulate fluoride in drinking water because of a possible risk that higher levels of the mineral could affect children\u2019s intellectual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/19\/health\/fluoride-neurotoxin-canada-study\/index.html\">development<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00403b5vcnfqa87c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US District Judge Edward Chen ruled that while it\u2019s not clear whether the amount of fluoride typically added to water is causing a drop in IQ in kids, there\u2019s enough risk to warrant investigation and that the EPA needs to take further action in regulating it. The ruling did not state what actions the EPA needs to take and the agency is currently reviewing the decision.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aosdw00003b5vycrx2hjj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And experts agree that despite the politicization of the issue, more research is needed to understand the effect on fluoride \u2013 not just on young children, but for the general population as well.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32b6f3e00073b5vkrrwj4gb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dr. Ashley Malin, assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the University of Florida\u2019s College of Public Health and Health Professions, told CNN in an email that \u201cprotecting vulnerable populations from environmental toxicants is a nonpartisan matter that should remain informed by the current state of the science.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32ctnau000p3b5vs79rk1ky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think that health effects of fluoride on young children, particularly in the realm of neurodevelopment have been sufficiently studied such that it has now been identified that a hazard to child IQ\ufeff is present. However, I would argue that more research is needed to better understand impacts of chronic low level fluoride exposure on adult health outcomes because that research is scarce,\u201d Malin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00433b5vcbpptri2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A \u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ntp.niehs.nih.gov\/publications\/monographs\/mgraph08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal review published<\/a>\u202fin August by the National Toxicology Program at the National Institutes of Health concluded higher levels of fluoride are\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/03\/health\/fluoride-drinking-water-tooth-decay-risk-benefit\/index.html\">linked to<\/a>\u202flowered IQ in children.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00443b5vsm3sk088@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The program based its conclusion on\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/25\/health\/epa-fluoride-drinking-water\/index.html\">studies involving fluoride levels<\/a>\u202fat about twice the recommended US limit for drinking water.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00453b5vhq6lw652@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, <a href=\"https:\/\/ntp.niehs.nih.gov\/publications\/monographs\/mgraph08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the review<\/a> also noted exposure levels at lower levels was less definitive: \u201cThe evidence of an association between fluoride exposure below 1.5 mg\/L and lower IQ in children appeared less consistent than results of studies at higher exposure levels.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00463b5vbaz2lzij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Previous research has also found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/19\/health\/fluoride-neurotoxin-canada-study\/index.html\">higher levels of fluoride exposure<\/a> during pregnancy were associated with declines in IQ in children.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00473b5vhqcy4lo7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A 2019 study looking at Canadian mothers and children found for each additional 1 milligram per liter in concentration of fluoride in a mother\u2019s urine, there was a 4.5-point drop in IQ in males. The study did not find such a significant association in female children, nor did it examine why boys were more significantly affected.\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm3261s4u005b3b5v2t3hm51z@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-we-know-about-fluoride-and-health\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        What we know about fluoride and health<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00493b5v58vnxoxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends community water fluoridation as a cost-effective way to improve Americans\u2019 oral health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004a3b5vh4bvc0io@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Exposure to fluoride above the public health recommended amount over many years can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Fluoride-HealthProfessional\/#en57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skeletal fluorosis,<\/a> a condition that is rare in the US and that causes weaker bones and joint pain. Too much fluoride can also lead to dental fluorosis, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oral-health\/about\/about-dental-fluorosis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cosmetic<\/a> and can lead to the outer enamel layer of the tooth to have white specks or lines.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004b3b5vx0zd5ktk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recent research examining the link between cancer and fluoride levels has not found an association, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/TSP\/ToxFAQs\/ToxFAQsDetails.aspx?faqid=211&amp;toxid=38#:~:text=damage%20the%20heart.-,How%20likely%20are%20fluoride%2C%20hydrogen%20fluoride%2C%20and%20fluorine%20to%20cause,to%20humans%20is%20not%20classifiable.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/risk-prevention\/chemicals\/water-fluoridation-and-cancer-risk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Cancer Society<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004c3b5vkjosngs6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There also isn\u2019t any evidence that fluoride can cause birth defects in humans, according to the CDC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004e3b5v2zeeqeva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mineral can help prevent tooth decay by strengthening the protective outer layer of enamel that can be worn away by acids formed by bacteria, plaque and sugars in the mouth. Adding fluoride to public water systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/03\/health\/fluoride-drinking-water-tooth-decay-risk-benefit\/index.html\">first started<\/a> in the United States in 1945.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004f3b5vrwrwn663@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, nearly three-quarters of the US population \u2014 about 209 million people \u2014 are served by drinking water systems that have been fluoridated, according to CDC data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004g3b5vjg34exbp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            State and local governments control most of the water supplies in municipalities across the country. Some communities throughout the country, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portland.gov\/water\/water-quality\/2024-drinking-water-quality-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portland, Oregon<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/3f03ea0b79184a8e8624c72d6c67542a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tucson, Arizona<\/a>, have voted to opt out of adding fluoride to their water.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004i3b5vw9fg02ip@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recent reports suggest the benefits of adding fluoride to water supplies may not be as significant as they once were, especially with the widespread use of toothpaste that includes fluoride, which has been available since the 1970s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004j3b5vl8p1dnnp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last month, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD010856.pub3\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from the Cochrane Collaboration, an independent group that systematically analyzes scientific research, found only a slight benefit in adding fluoride to tap water, leading to slightly fewer cavities in children\u2019s baby teeth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004k3b5v26qwuw17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Other studies determined that fluoride in water led to a difference of decay in only about a quarter of a tooth, on average, according to Cochrane report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004l3b5vv03lotx9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the American Dental Association says fluoride in community water supplies is \u201cthe single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm3262u5f005k3b5vuz0qyh4g@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cStudies prove water fluoridation continues to be effective in reducing dental decay by at least 25% in children and adults, even in the of era widespread availability of fluoride from other sources, such as fluoride toothpaste,\u201d the ADA says on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/resources\/community-initiatives\/fluoride-in-water\/fluoridation-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlk004n3b5vyad6mkew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC continues to promote the safety and benefits of community water fluoridation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlk004o3b5vxia4eux3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWater fluoridation has been identified as the most cost-effective method of delivering fluoride to all members of the community regardless of age, educational attainment, or income level,\u201d the agency wrote in a statement in May.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlk004p3b5v7ljrxvc4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re worried about your fluoride intake, you can switch to bottled water, look for water filters that filter out fluoride and make sure your kids don\u2019t swallow their toothpaste.\n
