Elissa Slotkin said last week during a campaign stop in Michigan. \u201cNo one gets to check it. It&#8217;s not available online. Right? Your vote is your choice. You don&#8217;t have to tell anyone.\u201d Slotkin, who\u2019s running for Senate, was campaigning with former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, who\u2019s also crossed the aisle to endorse Harris.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Their message is aimed at conservative-leaning women like T, whom we\u2019re calling by her first initial. T, who is in her 60s and lives in Wisconsin, asked for anonymity to discuss how living in a politically divided household is affecting her marriage of more than 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s frustrated with me that I won\u2019t listen to him plead his case. I can\u2019t and I won\u2019t,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>T says she mailed her absentee ballot from another family member\u2019s home to avoid a confrontation with her husband over her support for Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that he would ever stop me or anything, it\u2019s just I just can\u2019t deal with that animosity,\u201d she said with an audible sigh.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Keeping quiet<\/h3>\n<p>T says she\u2019d voted Republican her entire adult life \u2014 until Trump became the nominee in 2016. She describes Trump as \u201cmisogynistic,\u201d and a \u201cbuffoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband will say it\u2019s just what the media has fed me,\u201d T said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m saying uh-uh. I watched it with my own two eyes. That was actually when I left the Republican Party,\u201d K says. She lives in a red state in the Midwest and asked that we use her first initial because of fear of losing her job.<\/p>\n<p>K says she hasn\u2019t told most of her family, including her husband, that she\u2019s voting for Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe assumes I\u2019m voting Republican. I just listen to him talk about his views, and I just nod my head and go uh huh,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m thinking, yeah and my nieces have less bodily autonomy and rights at their ages than I had.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Avoiding conflict<\/h3>\n<p>Jackie Payne is executive director of Galvanize Action, which focuses on outreach to moderate white women on progressive issues. Because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/01\/nx-s1-5161522\/the-factors-behind-the-voter-gender-gap\"><u>gender gap<\/u><\/a> in voting patterns, she says it\u2019s not unusual for women to keep their political opinions to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen there is a conflict in the home, that can be very disquieting. And one of the things that we often hear from moderate white women is that they really hate conflict and they try to avoid it at all costs,\u201d Payne explained. \u201cFor a lot of moderate white women, what that looks like is disconnecting from political conversation. So they will withdraw from the conversation to try to avoid the conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea that women can secretly vote for Harris without their husbands knowing is being repeated in new ads from anti-Trump groups including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jlsd1wZ9jF4\"><u>Lincoln Project<\/u><\/a> and Vote Common Good.<\/p>\n<div id=\"resnx-s1-5159978-101\" class=\"bucketwrap video youtube-video large\">\n<p>\n        <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Julia Roberts Reminds Us - Your Vote, Your Choice\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FaCPck2qDhk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n    <\/p>\n<p>                <b class=\"credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                    <b class=\"source\">YouTube<\/b><br \/>\n                <\/b>\n        <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The ads have sparked pushback from conservative commentators. On the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5XkRXWIQSrE\"><u>Megyn Kelly Show<\/u><\/a>, Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA, a think tank focused on promoting conservative values with young voters, said women who vote secretly \u201cundermine their husbands, and described one of the ads as \u201cthe embodiment of the downfall of the American family.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Shy voters<\/h3>\n<p>But the desire to keep a vote private isn\u2019t new, says Eduardo Gamarra, a political scientist at Florida International University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are shy about expressing who they will vote for, particularly in close elections,\u201d said Gamarra, who is also a pollster, with a focus on Latino voters.<\/p>\n<div id=\"resnx-s1-5159978-102\" class=\"bucketwrap But this time around, Gamarra says he\u2019s seeing women who indicate in focus groups that they\u2019re quietly supporting Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re seeing a similar phenomenon today and it\u2019s largely being driven by abortion,\u201d he suggested.<\/p>\n<p>A, who\u2019s 35 and lives in Illinois, asked that we use only her first initial because she\u2019s worried about backlash from her religious community.<\/p>\n<p>She says she voted for Trump in the last two elections, but after a period of soul-searching, decided to vote for Harris this time. She says she was \u201cteetering\u201d about whether to vote at all, in part out of fear of criticism if anyone close to her found out how she\u2019d voted.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A says she\u2019s keeping her vote a secret from her boyfriend and especially her father, a committed Republican. She says she thought about her daughters when she was making her decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd as I was filling in that rectangle it was like, \u2018Hell yeah, girl. You did something so powerful for yourself, and for a lot of women,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to know how many people \u2014 especially women \u2014 are secretly voting for Harris.
