Both showers tend to be about quality over quantity \u2014 the Southern and Northern Taurids only produce around five meteors per hour each at their peaks, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/taurid-meteors-all-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to EarthSky<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg00073b6m73iba0hc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the dynamic duo often generates heightened activity of fireballs \u2014 meteors brighter than the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planet Venus<\/a> \u2014 from September through November, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#:~:text=Southern%20Taurids,-Currently%20active&amp;text=The%20shower%20is%20active%20for,reports%20from%20September%20through%20November.&amp;text=Next%20Peak%20%2D%20The%20Southern%20Taurids,moon%20will%20be%2011%25%20full.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg00083b6mh8ner4w4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPatience is very good, especially with these showers. \u2026 Try to go outside when it\u2019s clear and get a comfortable chair and something warm, maybe some hot cocoa, and just sort of plop yourself down and watch the sky,\u201d said Dr. Shannon Schmoll, director of Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg00093b6msuzrw462@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAn advantage with (the Taurids) is that they do tend to produce bigger, brighter (meteors) compared (with) other meteor showers. So if you do see one, it\u2019s probably going to be a much bigger \u2018wow\u2019 factor,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000a3b6m7y40qqlw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Southern Taurids have been active in the sky since late September. On the night of the peak, the moon will only be about 11% full, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Southern+Taurids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>, making for ideal viewing conditions to spot fainter meteors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000b3b6mtwizkrnz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Southern and Northern Taurid meteor showers will be visible almost<strong> <\/strong>everywhere in the world except Antarctica, Schmoll said, as long as the constellation Taurus is visible in the sky. Taurus is the showers\u2019 radiant from which meteors appear to originate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000c3b6mmvw3zzfn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fireballs are typically caused by meteors more 3 feet (1 meter) long, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/fireballs\/intro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>, making them appear brighter as they burn up in Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000d3b6mdg6pcxjb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Southern Taurids are made up of debris <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/2p-encke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from Comet Encke<\/a>, which has an orbital period of about 3.3 years around the sun \u2014 the shortest orbit of any known comet in the solar system. The celestial body creates a broad stream of debris that Earth encounters every year. When the particles enter Earth\u2019s atmosphere, they create the meteors we see streaking across the sky.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000e3b6meyq16huo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you have larger chunks of material, it will take longer to burn up, so it\u2019ll be a brighter, longer streak \u2014 a fireball is one of these (relatively) big ones,\u201d Schmoll said. Occasionally, the bigger space rocks fall to the ground, in which case they are known as meteorites, but most of the particles are too small and burn out quickly, she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000f3b6m2mwcjwg8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Every few years, the Taurid showers see an increase in the rates of meteors produced, often called the Taurid \u201cswarm,\u201d such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/taurid-meteors-will-there-be-a-swarm-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher rates created in 2022<\/a>. This heightened activity is usually seen every three or seven years, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/2022\/10\/will-there-be-a-swarm-of-taurid-meteors-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000g3b6mrqxkgf69@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Normal rates are expected this year for the Taurid showers \u2014 scientists predict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/05\/world\/southern-taurid-meteor-shower-november-fireball-scn\/index.html\">the next swarm<\/a> to occur in 2025 \u2014 but the celestial display could still offer a sight to see, Schmoll said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000h3b6m3zt4bkuu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it\u2019s really good for us to have those moments of focusing on the beauty of the universe \u2026 to have that connection to nature and outside and marvel at what\u2019s out there,\u201d Schmoll said. \u201cThere\u2019s something so exciting about seeing that streak of light, that interaction of the Earth with the rest of the solar system.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000i3b6muuwuyjhu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meteors from the Southern Taurids are expected to be seen blazing across the sky until their finality on December 8, according to the American Meteor Society.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000j3b6m6awg68cm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Northern Taurids are set to peak about a week later on November 11 and 12, and sky-gazers could see an increase in meteors blazing across the sky when both showers are active.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000k3b6mrzzie12e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here are the remaining meteor showers of 2024 and their peak dates, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000l3b6makbennpn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Leonids:<\/strong> November 16-17\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000m3b6mxu231rve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Geminids: <\/strong>December 12-13\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000n3b6m3e2ulaiq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Ursids: <\/strong>December 21-22\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2z82frg000o3b6mf2khkilq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And keep an eye out for the two full moons remaining in 2024 \u2014 the beaver moon, which is a supermoon, on November 15 and the cold moon on December 15, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmersalmanac.com\/full-moon-dates-and-times\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Farmers\u2019 Almanac<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async
