The battle royale has had plenty of concerts and events in recent years, but the Snoop collaboration is part of a plan to more deeply integrate music into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24065901\/fortnite-metaverse-disney-epic-partnership\">the budding metaverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThis is a partnership,\u201d Snoop said during an interview after the show. \u201cMost games just want one song and you don\u2019t even see the artist. But over the years, music has steadily permeated the game to the point that Snoop\u2019s Times Square performance was just a kickoff point for a monthlong event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Fortnite<\/em>\u2019s current season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/11\/1\/24283508\/fortnite-remix-chapter-2-concert-snoop-dogg-ice-spice\">dubbed Chapter 2 Remix<\/a>, debuted this weekend, rewinding the clock with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/10\/15\/20905428\/fortnite-chapter-2-season-1-release-date-battle-pass-black-hole\">a version of the battle royale map from several years ago<\/a>. But there\u2019s a twist \u2014 hence the \u201cremix\u201d in the title. Each week, the game will change slightly, themed around a different artist. Snoop is up first. You can enlist him as a companion, visit a heavily guarded Dogg Pound compound, or rock out as his tracks play on the radio as you drive around the island.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">If you boot up <em>Fortnite Festival<\/em>, the rhythm game developed by <em>Rock Band<\/em> studio Harmonix, he\u2019s the new headlining act, which means you can buy his songs to play along to, unlock Snoop-themed guitars and drum sets, and buy a crip walk emote that plays \u201cDrop It Like It\u2019s Hot.\u201d Snoop will be followed by Eminem, Ice Spice, and the late Juice WRLD, with future updates introducing elements like <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andredotuasset\/status\/1853219859741475322?t=EH9BlSHw3u3Xp4yw0XECiA\">a gun that spits Eminem lyrics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">According to Nate Nanzer, head of global partnerships at <em>Fortnite<\/em> developer Epic, there have been two key points in the evolution of music in the game that led to this point. The first was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/4\/23\/21233637\/travis-scott-fortnite-concert-astronomical-live-report\">Travis Scott\u2019s \u201cAstronomical\u201d concert<\/a>, which showed the scale possible with these kinds of virtual events, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/4\/23\/21233946\/travis-scott-fortnite-concert-astronomical-record-breaking-player-count\">an audience topping 12 million<\/a>. \u201cAfter we did Travis Scott we had everybody coming to us saying \u2018Hey, I want to do that,\u2019\u201d says Nanzer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The second was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/12\/9\/23992574\/fortnite-festival-harmonix-guitar-hero-rock-band\">the launch of <em>Fortnite Festival<\/em> last year<\/a>. Like the battle royale mode, <em>Festival<\/em> has seasons, each \u201cheadlined\u201d by a different artist, which, to date, has included stars like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/22\/24137317\/billie-eilish-fortnite-festival-date\">Billie Eilish<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/21\/24079009\/lady-gaga-comes-to-fortnite-tomorrow\">Lady Gaga<\/a>. \u201cIf you look at all of the things we did prior, they tended to be more one-off,\u201d says Nanzer. \u201cWe\u2019d do an event, and then months or even years would go by before we did something else. What <em>Festival<\/em> did was give us this venue to be able to celebrate music more regularly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">For Snoop\u2019s son Cordell Broadus, there was one particular moment that convinced him Snoop should be in <em>Fortnite<\/em>. In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/4\/21\/23034095\/fortnite-wu-tang-clan-gear\">a collaboration with the Wu-Tang Clan<\/a> featured an in-game glider that would play the chorus to \u201cC.R.E.A.M\u201d as players flew down to the battle royale island. \u201cI kept saying: \u2018I gotta put his music in there,\u2019\u201d he explains. \u201cBecause every time I play<em> Fortnite<\/em> that\u2019s what I hear. So a lot of the inspiration came from seeing them doing it, and seeing that <em>Fortnite<\/em>\u2019s not afraid to really deal with hardcore hip-hop.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">That feeling grew stronger as the more ambitious virtual concerts continued to make waves. \u201cWe\u2019re real competitive,\u201d says Broadus. \u201cSo we\u2019re competing with Travis Scott. What he did with <em>Fortnite <\/em>was huge, and I feel like we topped that tonight. But we\u2019ll let the people decide.\u201d (Snoop was quick to clarify that \u201cI didn\u2019t say that, he said that.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The <em>Fortnite<\/em> collaborations that get headlines \u2014 and a prime Friday night spot in Times Square \u2014 feature huge artists. But part of turning the game into a viable venue for music, according to Nanzer, is integrating it in multiple ways so that all kinds of artists can be featured. In addition to virtual concerts and headlining <em>Festival<\/em>, there are the emotes, in-game radio stations, and individual tracks you can buy to play in <em>Festival<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Not all of these ideas have worked out. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/9\/8\/21423004\/fortnite-party-royale-concert-series-dominic-fike\">Epic tried to create a virtual tour stop for artists in 2020<\/a>, going so far as to build out a studio space in Los Angeles, and the effort has largely fizzled out. But as the company continues to try to push <em>Fortnite<\/em> beyond its battle royale roots, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/12\/7\/23990660\/lego-fortnite-release-epic\">games like <em>Lego Fortnite<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/1\/24258447\/fortnite-creators-first-person-shooters-fps-unreal-editor\">a concentrated focus on community-made games and experiences<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/4\/24261555\/epic-disney-fortnite-unreal-fest\">a still-mysterious virtual world built with Disney<\/a>, music is another important tool to make the game more than just another live-service shooter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/4\/24235163\/concord-cancellation-live-service-games\">an increasingly difficult space to compete in<\/a>.
