{"id":122351,"date":"2024-11-05T13:49:42","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T06:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=122351"},"modified":"2024-11-05T13:49:42","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T06:49:42","slug":"ozempic-gives-strong-relief-to-severe-knee-pain-clinical-trial-suggests-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=122351","title":{"rendered":"Ozempic Gives Strong Relief to Severe Knee Pain, Clinical Trial Suggests : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The drug <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semaglutide\">semaglutide<\/a> is already proving incredibly effective in tackling  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/diabetes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73018\" data-postid=\"142480\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">diabetes<\/a> (under the brand name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-ozempic-and-why-are-people-saying-its-a-sad-way-to-lose-weight\">Ozempic<\/a>) and weight loss (as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/staggering-results-of-new-weight-loss-drugs-may-be-revolutionary-expert-says\">Wegovy<\/a>), and a new study suggests it can do wonders for a type of crippling knee pain too.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/patients\/drug-development-process\/step-3-clinical-research\">phase 3<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/clinical-trials\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73032\" data-postid=\"142480\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">clinical trial<\/a>, an international team of researchers found that a weekly dose of 2.4 milligrams of semaglutide significantly beat  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-a-placebo\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"102371\" data-postid=\"142480\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">placebo<\/a> treatments for relieving knee <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osteoarthritis\">osteoarthritis<\/a> pain, reducing weight, and improving the ability to complete physical activities like walking.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>For some participants, the pain reduction was so drastic that they were effectively &#8220;treated out of the study&#8221;, rheumatologist Henning Bliddal, from Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-03512-0\"><em>Nature<\/em><\/a>. It&#8217;s a ray of hope for the <a href=\"https:\/\/acrjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/art.42089\">hundreds of millions<\/a> of people living with knee osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142483\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/PainChart.jpg\" alt=\"Pain chart\" width=\"642\" height=\"325\" class=\"wp-image-142483 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/PainChart.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/PainChart-600x304.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pain reduction was significantly greater with semaglutide. (Bliddal et al., <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>, 2024)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The arthritic condition is brought on when the protective cartilage in the knee joints gets worn away, causing pain and stiffness that can be quite severe. Obesity is a major risk factor for knee osteoarthritis, and losing weight can help reduce the pain \u2013 two good reasons why the researchers wanted to look at semaglutide.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Semaglutide is what&#8217;s known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glucagon-like_peptide-1\">glucagon-like peptide-1<\/a> receptor agonist (GLP-1RA): essentially, it mimics the GLP-1 hormone that gets produced when we eat, and tricks the brain into thinking we&#8217;re full.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s going to help with weight loss, but the drug also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-022-05323-7\">works as an anti-inflammatory<\/a>, calming down overreactions from the body&#8217;s immune system that trigger swelling and tissue damage \u2013 which helps to explain the reduction in pain.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>On average, body weight dropped 13.7 percent in the group given semaglutide compared to 3.2 percent given placebos, while the reported pain scores dropped 41.7 points and 27.5 points respectively (the pain scale used runs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physio-pedia.com\/WOMAC_Osteoarthritis_Index\">from 0 to 96<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>There are a few caveats to drop in here: the study was partly funded by Novo Nordisk, which manufactures semaglutide. Also, while participants were given advice about diet and physical activity routines during the trial, there were no checks on how much of this advice was followed.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also worth bearing in mind that semaglutide in its various forms is an expensive drug, and that weight can quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ozempic-vs-wegovy-the-risks-and-side-effects-of-semaglutide-drugs\">pile back on<\/a> when doses are stopped. Getting people to take the drug long term could be challenging.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Despite those issues, the study results offer plenty of early promise for a future treatment for knee osteoarthritis and the debilitation that goes along with it.
