Arizona requires such proof to vote in state elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A judge had ruled that the voters on the list would be allowed to vote the full ballot in Tuesday\u2019s election despite the error. But last month lawyers for America First Legal, an organization founded by the former Trump adviser Stephen Miller, sued for the release of the names of the affected voters on behalf of a right-wing group in Phoenix, the Strong Communities Foundation of Arizona.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Fontes, a Democrat, argued that doing so would expose the people on the list to harassment and potentially violence at a time when former President Donald J. Trump and others are stoking fears of noncitizen voting in Tuesday\u2019s elections. During the 2022 midterms in Arizona, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/28\/us\/politics\/federal-judge-allows-activists-to-stake-out-ballot-boxes.html\" title=\"\">armed right-wing activists<\/a>, inspired by conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, took it upon themselves to monitor voting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t want blood on my hands,\u201d Mr. Fontes <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/elections\/2024-10-28\/fontes-asks-judge-to-keep-voter-registration-glitch-names-private\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in a court hearing last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The court order imposes strict conditions on the release of the voter list, which will be made available only to certain county election officials and a handful of state legislators, who are prohibited from distributing it further.
