if they win.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Fed policymakers will also have a chance to discuss the implications this week as the Federal Open Market Committee gathers Wednesday and Thursday in DC, with Powell at the head of the table.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->The main topic for Fed officials will be whether to make the second interest rate cut of 2024 \u2014 <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/video\/fed-meeting-wall-street-pricing-143637955.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:with markets pricing in a 25bps cut this week;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">with markets pricing in a 25bps cut this week<\/a> \u2014 but surely the political fallout will be on their minds as well.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Whether Trump will openly threaten the Fed&#8217;s independence if he wins is not clear, but a Trump win would immediately inject massive uncertainty in part because of the many mixed signals he has sent.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->He has talked about what he sees as his authority to fire Powell but then <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2024-trump-interview\/?srnd=undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:downplayed the notion;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">downplayed the notion<\/a>. He said he wanted <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/donald-trump-wants-a-say-in-setting-interest-rates-122238681.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:a &quot;say&quot; in setting interest rates;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">a &#8220;say&#8221; in setting interest rates<\/a> but then immediately walked that comment back.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->He has also offered varying levels of antagonism toward September&#8217;s jumbo rate cut, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/it-was-too-big-a-cut-trump-and-his-allies-slam-fed-after-inflation-report-185521631.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:most recently saying;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">most recently saying<\/a> in early October it was &#8220;too big a cut and everyone knows that was a political maneuver.&#8221;<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Trump&#8217;s allies have also floated an array of other ideas that could inject new uncertainty, including<a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/how-trump-could-exert-new-controls-over-the-fed--even-without-firing-powell-130015225.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:new controls over the Fed;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"> new controls over the Fed<\/a> that would be possible without even firing Powell.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p><button class=\"secondary-btn fin-size-large readmore-button rounded   yf-15mk0m\" data-ylk=\"elm:readmore;itc:1;sec:content-canvas;slk:Story%20Continues\" aria-label=\"Story Continues\" title=\"Story Continues\"> <span>Story Continues<\/span> <\/button> <\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more-wrapper\" style=\"display: none\">\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->The varying notions have remained a top topic of conversation in the nation&#8217;s capital. And Trump loyalists have already <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/what-trump-is-signaling-with-his-possible-treasury-and-fed-picks-140008359.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:been jockeying for months;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">been jockeying for months<\/a>, as a result.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Most of the names include figures who have surrounded Trump for years on economic policy \u2014 from former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, who was on the shortlist last time, to Kevin Hassett, who worked in the White House as a senior adviser to Trump.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Warsh was recently jokingly introduced as &#8220;chairman-elect&#8221; <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2024\/10\/24\/former-fed-governor-kevin-warsh-the-fed-doesnt-seem-to-have-a-serious-theory-of-inflation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:during a CNBC appearance;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">during a CNBC appearance<\/a> and suggested he would seek a change in course if he is selected, slamming the Fed&#8217;s recent September&#8217;s rate cut and suggesting the bank looks &#8220;like it&#8217;s lurching.&#8221;<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Hassett <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/37d3d365-b923-494a-98e9-daec46f8b1f8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:took a different view recently;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">took a different view recently<\/a>, telling the Financial Times that the September rate cut was justified by evidence of a weakening jobs market.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->A long-shot contender is former Fed nominee Judy Shelton, who has been a very loud Trump booster throughout the campaign. An attempt by Trump to select her last time was blocked by the Senate.
