Jaishankar while he was in the Australian capital, Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>India has denied Canada\u2019s allegation that Indian Home Minister Amit Shah ordered the targeting of Sikh activists inside Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Wong said her message to the Sikh community was that people have a right to be safe and respected in Australia, regardless of who they are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve made clear our concerns about the allegations under investigation. We\u2019ve said that we respect Canada\u2019s judicial process,\u201d Wong said at a news conference with Jaishankar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe convey our views to India as you would expect us to do and we have a principled position in relation to matters such as the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary and also, frankly, the sovereignty of all countries,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Jaishankar said Canada has put Indian diplomats under surveillance, which was \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada has developed a pattern of making allegations without providing specifics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Australia has close intelligence-sharing ties with Canada as members of the Five Eyes alliance that also includes the United States, Britain and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, India officially protested Canada\u2019s allegation of Sikh activists being targeted there as \u201cabsurd and baseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jaishankar on Tuesday also condemned reports of vandalism at a Hindu temple near Toronto in Canada on Sunday as \u201cdeeply concerning.\u201d In videos on social media, demonstrators carrying yellow flags in support of the Sikh separatist movement can be seen clashing with others, including some holding India\u2019s national flag, inside the temple complex. Indian consular officials were visiting the temple where the clashes erupted. It was unclear how the violence began. <\/p>\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the violence at the temple \u201cunacceptable,\u201d adding that \u201cevery Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attack on the temple also drew a strong rebuke from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. \u201cEqually appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India\u2019s resolve,\u201d he wrote on the social media platform X, adding that India expects Canada to ensure justice. <\/p>\n<p>Relations between the two countries soured after <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-india-sikh-diplomat-trudeau-modi-3c5572d9027769ea6adbd047ec6f462a\">Trudeau<\/a><\/span> said last year there were credible allegations the Indian government had links to the assassination of Sikh activist <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-india-sikh-trudeau-modi-nijjar-fb390e4a45d167711db4f96681edd0a2\">Hardeep Singh Nijjar<\/a><\/span> in Canada. India has vehemently rejected the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi, long anxious about Sikh separatist groups, has increasingly accused the Canadian government of giving free rein to separatists from a once-strong movement to create an independent Sikh homeland, known as Khalistan, in India.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomatic row led to the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/india-canada-ambassador-recalled-sikh-assassination-f099e210d2f9df93fea18a9de04e06f8\">expulsion<\/a><\/span> of each side\u2019s top diplomats last month.<\/p>\n<p>Jaishankar said, \u201cWe believe in freedoms, but we also believe freedom should not be misused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canada is not the only country that <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/justice-department-india-murderforhire-a7621636336da5d15cdbad0d7a8ae562\">has accused Indian officials<\/a><\/span> of plotting an assassination on foreign soil.
