Is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/apprentice\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Apprentice<\/a> designed to change the course of next month\u2019s election \u2013 and might it succeed? Disappointing box office returns so far suggest this is unlikely. History is also a guide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Since President Woodrow Wilson screened The Birth of a Nation, a film celebrating the Ku Klux Klan, in the East Room of the White House in 1915, politics and popular culture have had a push-and-pull relationship. Last month the fictional president Martin Sheen and other cast members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2024\/sep\/21\/we-had-no-political-agenda-the-white-house-hosts-a-west-wing-tv-reunion\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">visited Joe Biden\u2019s White House<\/a> to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The West Wing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Some film-makers are explicit in their intention to affect election outcomes, releasing their work just a week or two before polling day. Others come from the opposite direction, reckoning that an election year is the perfect time to draw attention to a political movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The Guardian chose films from each election year of the 21st century and interviewed the people who made them.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2000-the-contender\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2000: The Contender<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"3d1daf89-b3c2-4851-a635-a80238074ee3\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: PR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">A political thriller starring Joan Allen, Gary Oldman and Jeff Bridges tells the story of a female senator, Laine Hanson, who is in line for the vice-presidency only for disinformation about her past to threaten her confirmation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0527109\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Rod Lurie<\/a>, its writer and director, says over Zoom from a film shoot in Bulgaria: \u201cGeorge W Bush had just announced that he was going to run. My daughter was about seven years old and she asked me, Daddy, why are there no women presidents? I said, well, I promise you the time is coming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cI realised I wanted to make a movie in this arena and discuss what would be the unique difficulties of a woman running for the presidency or running to have some sort of power, in this case being selected vice-president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Lurie, who received an assist in the editing room from Steven Spielberg, adds: \u201cWe did a lot of research and went to Washington DC and met with several leaders and female leaders \u2013 or tried to \u2013 and learned quite a bit about the process. What I figured was that the sexism was \u2013 and still is \u2013 such an enormous part of not just Washington DC but also of much of the American electorate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Many observers thought the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/08\/movies\/contender-joan-allen.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Contender<\/a> was inspired by the scandal of Bill Clinton\u2019s affair with Monica Lewinsky, a 22-year-old intern, which led to his impeachment. But Lurie insists that the true impetus came from the confirmation hearing for the supreme court justice Clarence Thomas, in which the law professor Anita Hill made allegations of sexual harassment but found herself under interrogation by male senators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cHow easy it is to rip apart a woman sexually \u2013 much easier than it is a man \u2013 and we\u2019re seeing that today, of course. There is simply no escape for a woman who is slut-shamed back then or even right now. The men can be complete dandies, can have had multiple affairs, and at this point nobody touches it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cThe insinuations that they put Kamala Harris through are to me baseless but also ironic and very upsetting. More than one person has brought up the connection between what\u2019s happening now and what happened to the character in The Contender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">But Lurie was not trying to influence the 2000 election, eventually won by Bush, a Republican. \u201cThere was nothing in that movie that would be anti-Bush at all. We didn\u2019t attack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/republicans\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Republicans<\/a> as Republicans so no, that was not on my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">But when Lurie went on to make the TV series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/tvandradioblog\/2006\/oct\/30\/mummyincharge\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Commander in Chief<\/a>, in which Geena Davis played a female president, his political motivations came under scrutiny. \u201cWe were doing a press conference and they did a clip from the show, the entire cast and I were on stage and as the lights are coming up, I hear the first question from some reporter in Dallas saying, \u2018Is this a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2005\/sep\/29\/usnews.broadcasting\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">complete shill for Hillary Clinton<\/a>?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cThat\u2019s the first thing that people thought and the truth is that, no, I wasn\u2019t being a shill for Hillary Clinton but I was being a shill for a woman president.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2004-fahrenheit-911\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2004: Fahrenheit 9\/11<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"acbee8e7-8da9-4d38-91fa-661830c9b81c\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: Miramax\/Sportsphoto\/Allstar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cOn its surface it seems like movies that deal with politics, especially during an election year, have absolutely no impact,\u201d the documentary maker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/15\/michael-moore-harris-walz-trump-election\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Michael Moore<\/a> says by phone from New York. He would beg to differ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Moore won an Oscar for his documentary Bowling for Columbine on what was the fifth night of the war in Iraq. Accepting the award, he delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M7Is43K6lrg\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">an impassioned anti-war speech<\/a> that described George W Bush as a president who \u201csends us into a fictitious war for fictitious reasons\u201d. He was booed off stage at a time when the majority of Americans supported Bush\u2019s decision to invade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">But Moore was determined that this historic foreign policy blunder would be his next documentary subject. \u201cIt was like, we just have to do this<em>,<\/em>\u201d<em> <\/em>he recalls. \u201cEverybody told me not to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The movie was Fahrenheit 9\/11, a devastating critique of Bush and Tony Blair\u2019s deadly folly in Iraq. It received a 20-minute standing ovation at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festival-cannes.com\/en\/f\/fahrenheit-9-11\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Cannes film festival<\/a>. Moore later learned that the White House became alarmed and commissioned focus groups to examine its potential impact on Republican voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">After a rigmarole over funding, the film gained a national release in June. On its opening weekend it generated domestic box office revenue of $23.9m and went on to make $119m and a similar amount worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">This was an election year and Moore wanted Bush to lose to the Democratic challenger, John Kerry. \u201cThe story has been since then that the movie had no impact, Bush won, end of story. But Bush won by one state, Ohio, and by 118,000 votes. It was the smallest victory a wartime president in the history of the United States ever had. We were never going to get rid of Bush in that year because Americans are too nervous about throwing out a president during wartime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">But after being released on home video and shown on cable television, Moore contends, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/fahrenheit-9-11\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Fahrenheit 9\/11<\/a> did percolate into the consciousness of the electorate with far-reaching consequences for national politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cBetween the end of 2004, when the election was, all the way through 2005 and then in 2006, we had so many millions of Americans see the film and the truth about how we got into it, what it did to people. What happened in 2006? The Republicans are thrown out. Bush has got the war going on and now he doesn\u2019t have the House or Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">For Moore, the lesson was that the American people will come around and do the right thing. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to put a movie out in June and expect to change the electorate by November. But two years later people could see what a miserable thing the war was \u2013 \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/millercenter.org\/americas-war-in-iraq\/mission-accomplished-moment\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Mission accomplished<\/a>\u2019, all the bullshit and dead American boys coming back every week \u2013 and so there was this massive shift from I was a pariah, I was anti-American, etc to wow, he stood on the stage and told us the truth and we booed him. The rest of the next five years were people, especially in Hollywood, apologising to me for having been there, having booed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Twenty years have now passed. US forces withdrew from Afghanistan and Iraq. Moore made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_heq6CkeMH8\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Fahrenheit 11\/9<\/a>, a documentary about how the US ended up with Donald Trump in the White House. Bush\u2019s vice-president, Dick Cheney, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/sep\/06\/dick-cheney-vote-kamala-harris\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">endorsed the Democrat Kamala Harris<\/a> for president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Moore reflects: \u201cThe whole Iraq and Afghanistan era was very sad for us. But the best letters I got were from the vets, the people that were there in Iraq and Afghanistan. The last people that you would think would be writing to me were writing me because they\u2019d seen Fahrenheit, they were there in Iraq and they were grateful that somebody was willing to stand up and tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2008-w\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2008: W<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"f9bd3017-424d-4847-8c82-758695358b37\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: Lionsgate\/Sportsphoto\/Allstar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The next Bush blockbuster was Oliver Stone\u2019s biopic W, which portrayed the president (Josh Brolin) struggling to escape the shadow of his father, President George HW Bush (James Cromwell). Stone said: \u201cI want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0007140\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Stanley Weiser<\/a>, who wrote the screenplay, says by phone from Santa Monica, California: \u201cI felt that there were two dynamics. One was the father-son relationship and the wayward son basically was unfavourably compared to his brother and was considered profligate and going nowhere and having to prove himself. The other was the path to a new war in Iraq and how Bush was hornswoggled by [Donald] Rumsfeld, [Dick] Cheney and [Paul] Wolfowitz into believing that there were weapons of mass destruction. And Bush being so impressionable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Although Stone is known for his strident political views, Weiser focused on art rather than activism. \u201cI tried to separate myself from the man and write about him both from his point of view and also in an objective political arena. I tried to separate myself pretty much from my own political feelings as I was writing it and trying to get into his head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cI knew there would be people who felt that I was going too easy on him and those who felt that I was too critical. I knew going in what that reaction would be but I tried as best I could to be as accurate as I could, according to all the research I had done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">W was released in mid-October 2008, just before the presidential election between the Republican John McCain and the Democrat Barack Obama. But Weiser was not thinking about its political consequences. \u201cI had tunnel vision about what I was writing so I wasn\u2019t thinking about that. The task at hand was quite hard and so I filtered that out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Bush\u2019s approval rating was low when he left office but his reputation has grown in recent years, partly because many regard him as a moderate figure compared with the extremism of Trump. Weiser adds: \u201cThere\u2019s this whole revisionist take on Bush and it\u2019s quite extraordinary because you think of the number of thousands of people who were killed in the Iraq war. Trump, as horrendous as he is, did not have a major war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Weiser is glad that W stands as a warts-and-all chronicle of Bush\u2019s presidency. Does he believe that movies can sway elections? \u201cI do, but not significantly because the vast majority of voters don\u2019t bother to go to the movies. Their minds are made up. They feel what they\u2019re seeing must be a mischaracterisation or partisan politics. Younger people can be swayed so movies can make a difference but just not that considerable.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2008-recount\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2008: Recount<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"6157af88-f422-4dfb-869e-2dbf87932c43\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: PictureLux\/The Hollywood Archive\/Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Recount turned dimpled chads and other shenanigans in Florida during the 2000 presidential election into an edge-of-the-seat thriller starring Kevin Spacey and Tom Wilkinson. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2021\/oct\/11\/dopesick-michael-keaton-hulu-opioid-crisis-purdue-pharma\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Danny Strong<\/a> wrote the screenplay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">He says from Los Angeles that Recount was inspired by the British playwright David Hare\u2019s play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2004\/sep\/11\/theatre.politicaltheatre\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Stuff Happens<\/a>, written in response to the Iraq war. \u201cI walked out of the theatre just so inspired by the play, thinking I want to write something like that. I want to write a true story, inside accounts of a major political event and then the idea of the Florida recount popped into my head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cThis was 2005 so it was several years after the recount had happened. There was nothing about it in concept where I was thinking, I\u2019m going to write this to affect the election. It was literally just an idea for a movie I came up with that I thought could be an exciting film. Then when I started researching the actual Florida recount, I just thought, this is an incredible story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Strong continues: \u201cThe circumstances were unbelievable and then the way in which the two sides fought the fight was completely fascinating. There\u2019s a line in it where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2020\/oct\/11\/the-man-who-ran-washington-review-james-baker-republican-susan-glasser\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">James Baker<\/a> says, \u2018we\u2019re the middle of a street fight for the presidency of the United States,\u2019 and that\u2019s what was happening. It was literally a street fight for the presidency. I thought the story was a timeless story, a story for the ages. It deserved to be codified as a film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">But for Strong, the notion that such a film would sway an election is like looking through the wrong end a telescope. \u201cI don\u2019t know if people believe it\u2019s going to impact voting. The sense is that it will have much more impact, media attention, buzz, interest in an election year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cIt motivates people to get the film made. It\u2019s hard to get any movie made. Thinking like, \u2018oh, if we could get this out for the election in the election year, it can really pop and have some buzz\u2019 is certainly a motivating factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cI know with both Recount and Game Change we wanted the films to come out in the spring, not in the fall, to have a little bit of shield from criticism that we were trying to affect the election. There was a sense of we were trying to avoid that exact criticism so we were pushing for earlier in the year than later in the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2012-game-change\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2012: Game Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"bdaa57cd-4e34-429b-8685-c92d4599e6a1\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: Hbo\/Playtone\/Kobal\/Rex\/Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Game Change told how Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, was plucked from relative obscurity to become Senator John McCain\u2019s running mate in the 2008 election \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/feb\/13\/sarah-palin-republican-party-trump-defamation-trial\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">foreshadowing an era of rightwing populism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Recount\u2019s director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0005366\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jay Roach<\/a>, had approached Strong to make a film about Palin. He was reluctant at first but then he read the book Game Change by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin and immediately spotted its cinematic potential. The film starred Julianne Moore as Palin and Woody Harrelson as the political operative Steve Schmidt, who first floated the idea of her becoming the vice-presidential nominee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cThis is another one of those one for the ages stories of someone who\u2019s thrust in this position and seems to be way in over her head,\u201d Strong says. \u201cThere seemed like a lot of drama there. You had <a href=\"https:\/\/steveschmidt.substack.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Steve Schmidt<\/a> and the powerful arc of this guilt he had about promoting her to that position, a sort of warped Pygmalion story. It seemed like a rich tale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cWe felt like we were telling a story that was showing the creation of the Tea Party [a conservative revolt fuelled by rage against elites, distrust in government and racial hostility to Barack Obama]. That was definitely part of it but I don\u2019t think we realised how in many ways she was the first sign of how powerful populist messaging could be in the Republican party. That\u2019s why Game Change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2024\/10\/game-change-movie-vice-presidential-debates\/680089\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">still gets talked about<\/a><em>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">But again Strong was not aiming to tilt the 2012 election between Obama and the Republican Mitt Romney. \u201cI don\u2019t come out writing these movies and making these movies thinking this is going to affect the election. It\u2019s more of, I think the story\u2019s amazing and fascinating and I want to tell the story, so how best can this story succeed? Well, in an election year there\u2019s going to be more interest in it than not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cBut in both Recount and Game Change it was a goal of ours to not come out too close to the election because we didn\u2019t want this perception of it to be soured in that way. We still wanted it to live on as a piece of art that\u2019s saying something as opposed to a piece of propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2016-all-the-way\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2016: All the Way<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"ff72c57c-b151-4d5a-956d-7c7efa9c49fe\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: Hilary Bronwyn Gayle\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The playwright <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertschenkkan.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Robert Schenkkan<\/a> drew on oral transcripts, film footage, newspaper reports, White House phone calls, speeches and FBI files to portray the first year of Lyndon B Johnson\u2019s presidency following the assassination of John F Kennedy. All the Way was a hit play on Broadway, winning a Tony award, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/tvandradioblog\/2015\/sep\/03\/bryan-cranston-lyndon-johnson-hbo-tv-biopic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">adapted for an HBO film<\/a> starring Bryan Cranston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Schenkkan had worked on the play for several years before the 2016 election, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a> defeated Hillary Clinton. \u201cBut the issues at the heart of it \u2013 the struggle about power and morality and the kinds of choices one is forced to in a constitutional representative democracy like America \u2013 were incredibly relevant,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cI know for a fact that [the Democratic leader] Nancy Pelosi, who came to the opening and saw it, then returned a second time with members of the Democratic caucus because she wanted them to see what is possible if you embrace your power. I\u2019m very pleased she felt that way about it but I can\u2019t say that there\u2019s a long list of legislation that resulted from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">All the Way features Martin Luther King and the struggle for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/civil-rights-act\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Civil Rights Act<\/a>, which Johnson signed in 1964. Schenkkan continues: \u201cThe racial politics, which are very much at the heart of it, has never abated. If anything, it\u2019s gotten extraordinarily worse. We\u2019ve taken a step back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cTrump has legitimised the coarsest expression of the racial animus that has been at the heart of American politics since before the civil war. I was very much aware of that and very much trying to help an American audience appreciate this movement and how potent and powerful it\u2019s been and how it has shaped American politics for such a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Schenkkan has also written hot-off-the-press political works such as Building the Wall, a response to Trump\u2019s anti-immigration rhetoric and policies, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/25\/arts\/television\/mueller-report-live-reading.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Investigation<\/a>, which adapted the report by the special counsel Robert Mueller on contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia. \u201cYou do what you can and hope it makes a difference,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Although he remains sceptical of the idea that a single movie could alter the race for the White House, Schenkkan does recognise the power of art to have a broader and deeper influence. \u201cFilm has sometimes had a potent effect not so much on specific elections but certainly on political movements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cThe Birth of a Nation absolutely affected and continues to affect American politics in the most terrible way; similarly [the 1935 German Nazi propaganda film] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2021\/dec\/09\/burying-leni-riefenstahl-nina-gladitz-lifelong-crusade-hitler-film-maker\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Triumph of the Will<\/a>. But neither of these changed an election. Politics can make for important movies but I don\u2019t think movies make significant politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2020-borat-subsequent-moviefilm\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2020: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"9cc7dc5c-8d06-4f6d-9a01-3d85382d396d\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: Amazon\/Allstar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The sequel to Borat was released just before the 2020 poll with the overt aim of embarrassing Trump, who was seeking re-election, and his acolytes. The film\u2019s star, Sacha Baron Cohen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/17\/style\/sacha-baron-cohen-maureen-dowd-interview.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told the New York Times<\/a> that he wanted to release the film before the election as \u201ca reminder to women of who they\u2019re voting for \u2013 or who they\u2019re not voting for\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was shot in secret and not announced until shortly before it came out. Its director, Jason Woliner, says by phone from California: \u201cSacha was inspired to bring the character back and to do the film because of Trump and what Trumpism and everything had done to America and definitely made the movie with the intention of motivating Americans to vote him out back in 2020. It was released the weekend before the election and it did make something of a splash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Most memorably, Trump\u2019s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani is seen reaching into his trousers and apparently touching his genitals while reclining on a bed in the presence of the actor playing Borat\u2019s daughter, Maria Bakalova, posing as a TV journalist (Bakalova also appears in The Apprentice, playing Trump\u2019s wife Ivana). Woliner had no idea that the audacious sting would work as well as it did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cFrom the inception the movie was about Borat being given the task of delivering his daughter to a prominent man in the Trump universe and Rudy was there from day one,\u201d he recalls. \u201cWe\u2019d actually booked Mike Lindell, the MyPillow guy, as a back-up for the day after but Rudy worked and we fled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cIt was pretty wild: minutes after it blew up, we all escaped that hotel and within minutes there were, I think, seven police cars outside and we got word that every cop in New York was looking for our crew. We had to get our whole crew out of the state that night. It was very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">As the embarrassing clip generated a media firestorm, Giuliani was forced into a series of defensive media interviews. The former New York mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RudyGiuliani\/status\/1319031305120657410\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">tweeted<\/a>: \u201cThe Borat video is a complete fabrication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Woliner says: \u201cWho knows what impact it had but certainly at the time Rudy was not how we think of him right now. He was actually pretty close to Trump and was a pretty prominent surrogate, basically, and was pushing that whole Hunter Biden laptop story. If anything, the way Rudy came off in the movie probably discredited him and maybe shut that story down a bit, but who knows? Maybe it had a small impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">But his reputation was in freefall. Four days after the election, which Trump lost, Giuliani held a farcical press conference at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/11\/11\/933635970\/from-obscure-to-sold-out-the-story-of-four-seasons-total-landscaping-in-just-4-d\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Four Seasons Total Landscaping<\/a>, a small business in north-east Philadelphia, near a sex shop and a crematorium. Presumably the Trump campaign had intended to book the upscale Four Seasons hotel but got confused. Later that month Giuliani gave a press conference with what appeared to be dark hair dye streaking down his sweaty face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Woliner observes: \u201cEverything he did in real life in the month following was absolutely funnier than anything that we may have done.\u201d Giuliani has lost his law licence in New York state over his actions to spread lies about voter fraud in the 2020 election and become a figure of ridicule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Giuliani was not Borat\u2019s only target. During the edit, Woliner rewatched Mike Pence giving a speech to a conservative conference earlier in the year in which the vice-president \u2013 who was interrupted by Borat in a Trump costume \u2013 boasted that there were few Covid-19 cases in the US and the threat was contained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cJust seeing that in context when the whole world is shut down and the administration has failed so much on Covid, we felt these were powerful moments to include. Again, I have no idea what impact it actually had but it\u2019s rare that a movie can be released at a moment so relevant to it content. You don\u2019t get to see it too often, especially because studios are often in the business of attempting to look non-partisan. We were very fortunate that Amazon put it out in the way it did.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2024-the-apprentice\" class=\"dcr-n4qeq9\"><strong>2024: The Apprentice<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"e0cec970-2cc6-4024-94b8-4596b33fca79\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1fujct4\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span> Photograph: piefWeyman|pief.ca\/Pief Weyman \u00a9 Apprentice Productions Ontario Inc. Profile Productions 2 APS Tailored Films LTD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The new drama stars Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump in his years on the make in the 1970s as a New York property developer and his mentor-protege relationship with the lawyer-political fixer Roy Cohn, played by Succession\u2019s Jeremy Strong. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm4389150\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ali Abbasi<\/a>, the film\u2019s director, plays down its potential impact on next month\u2019s election between Trump and Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">He says: \u201cThe idea that we, with an independent movie that had a difficult time getting distribution, could affect the US election, which is the most gigantic, money-sucking endeavor of politics in human history \u2026 I wish I had those powers, honestly. That would be great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Abbasi adds: \u201cI don\u2019t think movies change elections, generally speaking \u2013 not in India, not in Iran, not in the US, because people have bigger, other very concrete worries, like things that affect their everyday life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cWhat I want to achieve is not changing the election. I want to achieve the change of mindset, if I can, with people, because, look, as dangerous as is the rhetoric of alienating people by saying they\u2019re eating cats and dogs and they\u2019re rapists and whatnot, as dangerous is alienating the other side, so much that people feel it\u2019s legitimate to shoot them, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Some observers have suggested that the film might in fact elicit sympathy for Trump by turning him into a three-dimensional character rather than a cartoon villain. \u201cPeople keep saying, oh, you guys are humanising too much,\u201d Abbasi says. \u201cI\u2019m like, there is no such thing as humanising too much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cIf I can somehow get the American people to realise that it\u2019s not about Democrats, it\u2019s not about Republicans, it\u2019s not about the political system, it\u2019s about the whole justice system, the whole way you keep and manipulate power in this country, and then there\u2019s the story of this guy \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/apr\/21\/donald-trump-roy-cohn-film-the-apprentice\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Roy Cohn<\/a> is a complicated guy \u2013 flawed people, but still people.
