Seizing on a rare encore, the filmmakers have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sarahrehmeier\/video\/7419870106429295915?_r=1&amp;_t=8qnHLnVc5RW\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">rallied fans<\/a> to support a shot at the theatrical run they never had.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou don\u2019t get second chances in this business,\u201d the film\u2019s writer-director Adam Carter Rehmeier told the audience during a post-screening Q&amp;A. The surprise comeback began around September when an inexplicable bump in TikTok\u2019s algorithm turbo-blasted the movie and its earworm original song, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@h4yd3nn_.__\/video\/7426220703684349189\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWatermelon.\u201d<\/a> Soon after, the film was trending across Hulu (<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/movie\/bd30c6e7-6d6d-40ed-b16e-d01e63db5aa1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">where it is currently streaming<\/a>), Letterboxd and Google. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thefridacinema\/p\/DBto_IWNi-D\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Frida Cinema<\/a> in Santa Ana, Calif., was one of the first theaters to announce a screening, selling out in less than 24 hours. The nonprofit cinema said the requests for \u201cDinner in America\u201d were the most they\u2019d received for any film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The plot follows the unlikely musical and sexual chemistry between Simon (Kyle Gallner) and Patty (Emily Skeggs). He\u2019s an on-the-lam, slick crust punk; she\u2019s a mousy 20-year-old whose parents keep her away from strobe lights and on five different medications. She finds refuge from bullies and suburban stupor by mailing Polaroid nudes and love poems to her favorite hardcore band\u2019s ski-masked lead singer, who, coincidentally, is Simon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When \u201cDinner in America\u201d was released for a limited theatrical run, as well as on demand, in 2022, The New York Times gave it a mixed review. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/26\/movies\/dinner-in-america-review.html\" title=\"\">The critic Concepci\u00f3n de Le\u00f3n wrote<\/a> that the movie \u201cdelivers on surprise and explosiveness, but much of its offensive language, both racist and homophobic, feels gratuitous in a film that might have otherwise landed as an offbeat love story.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But content creators have been lifting up the film. The screenwriter Nic Curcio <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nicolascurciowriter\/video\/7423576961928301870?_r=1&amp;_t=8qnHKblrgoo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pitched the film<\/a> to his TikTok followers as the \u201clove child of \u2018Napoleon Dynamite\u2019 and Todd Solondz\u201d after noticing the uptick beyond the usual <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/15\/movies\/tiktok-movie-reviews-critics.html\" title=\"\">MovieTok<\/a> nerds.
