The increase is greatest among children, growing from 1.0% to 7.2% among ages 2\u20134 years and from 3.6% to 7.4% among ages 5\u201317 years, according to discharge data from March 31 through Oct. 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XHAPDZWLXJDHTGAECIAMBHOWWU\">\u201cThe increase in children ages 2\u20134 years is notable because M. pneumoniae historically hasn\u2019t been recognized as a leading cause of pneumonia in this age group,\u201d the CDC wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncird\/whats-new\/mycoplasma-pneumoniae-infections-have-been-increasing.html#:~:text=M.%20pneumoniae%20can%20cause%20%22walking,%2C%20wheezing%2C%20or%20vomiting).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oct. 18 report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SIV4AU3M6NDJRDRQQWAH6NNQ24\"><b>ALSO: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/healthfit\/2024\/10\/women-children-in-nj-are-healthier-than-most-of-the-country-but-still-fall-short-in-these-areas.html?gift=b247a091-703b-4ddd-8d44-a6666ad1b92a\"><b>Women, children in N.J. are healthier than most of the country, but still fall short in these areas<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QHMDTGGMHBHEJCWXFYJZA5PMME\">New Jersey is experiencing a similar increase in cases of M. pneumoniae, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/education\/broadcasts\/2024\/oct\/30\/NJDOH-MycoplasmaPneumoniaeInfectionsIncreasinginNewJersey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an advisory released last week by the New Jersey Department of Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ODPCCDGBDJEFPOZJYNAEG6C55U\">M. pneumoniae infections are common, with an estimated two million infections occurring each year in the United States, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4M7TN7QJURAKTESYFT54PIFH3Q\">However, since there\u2019s no national reporting or dedicated surveillance system to track these infections, the exact number of cases is unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B2M6JNYPI5B6JA5K5KL4NMPZCE\">The state Department of Health did not respond immediately Tuesday to questions about the number of cases in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3TJCNLVRGJDW7EEDFAHWRCQHJU\">M. pneumoniae infections are often mild and mostly present as a chest cold but could also present as pneumonia, according to the CDC. Symptoms can include fever, cough, and a sore throat. Younger children may have different symptoms, such as diarrhea, wheezing, or vomiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XQBFC6BEZRBNTF5F2MXKXL72EA\">Because the symptoms are usually mild, people with M. pneumoniae infections can seem better than expected for someone with a lung infection. They might not stay home and can pose a risk to others when going out. For this reason, medical professional have dubbed M. pneumoniae-associated pneumonia as \u201cwalking pneumonia,\u201d according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JDOCZ363MZE6XCEEQZ46OKTVZA\">The illness is spread by respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
