data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the city of Rome constructed what looks like a backyard swimming pool in front of the famous Trevi Fountain for tourists to toss their coins into while the baroque landmark is emptied for renovations, the reaction was swift \u2014 and brutal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye00043b6mzh1m2j6b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Erected late last week, the pool is adorned with unpainted plywood and sits behind a tall fence covered by transparent plastic, over which tourists throw coins in the hope of hitting the water.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye00053b6m5c13vh1j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The loose change now scattered around the perimeter underscores just how challenging that is.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye00063b6m0cv8fo3w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            City officials have confirmed the pool was built primarily to protect workers inside the emptied fountain from getting hit by coins.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye00073b6mok7gh7b4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It will also ensure that the site continues to harvest 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million) a year in coins, which is given to Catholic charity Caritas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye00083b6mjf5byrb4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe basin, which is of course temporary and was installed during the exceptional maintenance work on the fountain, is used to collect coins thrown by tourists,\u201d Claudio Parisi Presicce, Capitoline superintendent for cultural heritage told CNN. \u201cIt is a well-established and much-loved tradition.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye00093b6msgylunpd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Online commentators, meanwhile, have been hurling their own shots at the new construction, deriding it on X as a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GassmanGassmann\/status\/1853437806820929543\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">footbath<\/a>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BettaMichela\/status\/1853680285675569285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">architectural infantilism<\/a>,\u201d and a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Enciclopedica1\/status\/1853506168196575444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small children\u2019s pool where they pee in the water in the summer<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye000a3b6mjy0prq2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another, posting as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mamboitaliano__\/status\/1852675292382237032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mambo Italiano<\/a>, described it as: \u201cThe saddest thing I\u2019ve seen in Italy in as long as I can remember.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div Legend \u2014 or at least the movie world \u2014 has it that if you throw one coin over your shoulder into the fountain, it ensures a return to Rome. Two coins means you\u2019ll fall in love with an attractive Italian, and three coins means you will marry that person. Other legends lean towards paying homage to the gods of water.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye000c3b6mv4gw805n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The extensive 300,000-euro renovation (around $327,550) that got underway in early October is expected to finish up just in time for 2025 celebrations in Rome to mark a \u201cjubilee\u201d year in the Roman Catholic church, which is expected to draw millions of visitors to the city.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye000d3b6madvlq8wj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the meantime, a metal gangway is being erected over the empty fountain for tourists to get a close view of the fountain\u2019s sculpture Oceanus, the Titan God of Earth, depicted with galloping horses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye000e3b6m4xz73qw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The walkway will eventually be altered to pave the way for charging tourists a two-euro admission fee to get close enough to toss their coins which, if it comes to fruition, would begin in April 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34ng8ye000f3b6m9wh4bilt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            City authorities have not yet fully signed off on measures including the cordoning off of the whole square following complaints from local shops and residents after it was first announced.
