The moment means that Penn has been elevated to president, and her staffers run to protect her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJanney was as astonished by the turn of events when she read the final script as viewers likely were when they saw it unfold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI literally threw the script across the room,\u201d Janney said, prefacing that remark by noting that she had \u201cnever had this happen\u201d previously in her career, on Monday\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jimmy-kimmel\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jimmy-kimmel_1\" data-tag=\"jimmy-kimmel\">Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> Live!<\/em> \u201cIt was like what the? \u2026 It is such a spectacular ending, I get chills thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Allison Janney on Starting a Celebrity Band, Playing VP on The Diplomat &amp; Suspicious Ring Footage\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gyqCAdItpX8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/the-diplomat-season-3-season-2-ending-explained-1236052624\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/the-diplomat-season-3-season-2-ending-explained-1236052624\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Diplomat <\/a><\/em>showrunner Debora Cahn previously told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> that the idea for the season-two ending was connected to knowing Janney was boarding the series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cOnce we knew that Allison Janney was coming, it became clear that we wanted her to be a strong center of gravity in the story. And at that point, it sort of seemed obvious that that was the move,\u201d Cahn said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEarlier, Janney told Kimmel that she \u201cloosely\u201d based her character on Hillary Clinton, \u201cbecause of how seasoned she is as a politician and all of the experience she has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJanney added, \u201cAnd I love Hillary, but she doesn\u2019t come off as a very warm and fuzzy person. I kind of thought that would be good for Grace Penn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tClinton, and the superficial scrutiny she faced during her political campaigns, also served as inspiration behind the second season\u2019s memorable scene of Penn criticizing Kate\u2019s appearance, part of which was played on <em>Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cJust talking about the level of granularity into your life, yourself, your body that happens when you are being crafted into a product for the public, I just found it so striking that I had been waiting for two seasons to find a place to put it in and finally did,\u201d Cahn said, adding that the comments about Kate\u2019s hair and bra came from things people had really said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tProduction is already underway on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/the-diplomat-renewed-season-three-netflix-1236029504\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">third season of <em>The Diplomat<\/em><\/a>, and Sewell told <em>THR<\/em> that things only get more complicated and thrilling in the next season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe end of season two is one thing but very quickly even more extraordinary things happen,\u201d he said. \u201cAllison Janney coming in, the dynamics of the story after what happens at the end of season two really gives us some extraordinary things. Also it changes dynamics that might have been in danger of playing out.
