A mixed-race woman with Black and Indian heritage took his place roughly three months before Election Day. And their opponent, a former president vying for nonconsecutive terms in office, was convicted of 34 felonies while on the campaign trail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As the melodrama unfolded, the ups and downs of each candidate were tracked not only in the polls but for the first time in modern history by prediction markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prediction markets are, for lack of a better term, just betting lines. Bettors can wager on who they think will win, by how much, and in which states. On Polymarket, which only takes bets in cryptocurrency, punters could even have put money on whether Taylor Swift would attend Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019s rally Monday. (She went to the Kansas City Chiefs game instead.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The central question of whether Harris or former President Donald Trump would win the presidential election saw $3.2 billion Polymarket bets as of Election Day. The majority of bets went for Trump, with $1.3 billion wagered on the former president and $827 million on Harris. Polymarket did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The rise of betting markets signaled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-11-04\/election-gambling-markets-face-their-moment-of-truth\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-11-04\/election-gambling-markets-face-their-moment-of-truth\" rel=\"noopener\">step change<\/a> in how elections were covered by the press and observed by the public. Pundits, analysts, and Wall Street investors started to factor in prediction markets to their election forecasts. The rationale was that they reflected people\u2019s true feelings because they were putting their own money on the line. In reality that was only partially true: All betting lines fluctuate based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/25\/prediction-market-polymarket-kalshi-trump-harris\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/25\/prediction-market-polymarket-kalshi-trump-harris\" rel=\"noopener\">betting volumes<\/a> as much as on the external factors that influence the race.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in late July after President Joe Biden\u2019s abysmal debate performance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/biden-stock-tanks-election-betting-markets-after-disaster-performance\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/biden-stock-tanks-election-betting-markets-after-disaster-performance\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump\u2019s odds soared<\/a>. However, a late-October rally in Trump\u2019s odds was a result of aberrant betting behavior from just 1% of Polymarket\u2019s users, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2024-10-25\/polymarket-whale-traders-how-1-of-bettors-are-boosting-trump-s-odds\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2024-10-25\/polymarket-whale-traders-how-1-of-bettors-are-boosting-trump-s-odds\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to Bloomberg.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The financial world was just as glued to the prediction markets as political types were. \u201cVarious assets have been impacted by the results from Polymarket,\u201d Lukman Otunuga, senior market analyst at the online trading platform FTXM, told <em>Fortune.<\/em> \u201cThis was reflected across global markets with the \u2018Trump trade\u2019 boosting the U.S. dollar, Bitcoin, and financial stocks in October. It seems investors have used prediction markets to get an edge before Election Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the last days of the campaign, there seems to be evidence that some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/currencies\/dollar-slips-traders-unwind-trump-trades-2024-11-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/currencies\/dollar-slips-traders-unwind-trump-trades-2024-11-04\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump trades are unwinding<\/a>, in part because the volatility of the former president\u2019s election odds indicated he might lose, after being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/stock-market-today-dow-sp500-nasdaq-live-11-05-2024\/card\/prediction-market-prices-point-to-likely-trump-victory-mqoFVvCPgrHxYqTxM6AR\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/stock-market-today-dow-sp500-nasdaq-live-11-05-2024\/card\/prediction-market-prices-point-to-likely-trump-victory-mqoFVvCPgrHxYqTxM6AR\" rel=\"noopener\">favored<\/a> for much of the race.<\/p>\n<p>In this election cycle the volatility of prediction markets have provided a counterweight to the stability of the polls. Traditional voter polls kept showing a statistical dead heat, while betting markets fluctuated regularly\u2014rising and falling because of Harris\u2019s strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/siladityaray\/2024\/09\/19\/harris-expands-lead-in-election-betting-market-after-strong-post-debate-polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/siladityaray\/2024\/09\/19\/harris-expands-lead-in-election-betting-market-after-strong-post-debate-polls\/\" rel=\"noopener\">debate performance<\/a>, Trump\u2019s latest offensive remarks and, yes, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/trump-election-odds-tumble-on-betting-markets-after-iowa-poll-shows-harris-lead-06ee5a9b\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/trump-election-odds-tumble-on-betting-markets-after-iowa-poll-shows-harris-lead-06ee5a9b\" rel=\"noopener\">late, dramatic polling<\/a> from star Iowa pollster Ann Selzer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For some bettors (or are they investors?), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-10-29\/election-odds-betting-on-donald-trump-kamala-harris-with-polls-deadlocked\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-10-29\/election-odds-betting-on-donald-trump-kamala-harris-with-polls-deadlocked\" rel=\"noopener\">volatility is the appeal<\/a>. In prediction markets, bettors buy contracts that pay out $1 if the outcome they bet on happened. The price of that contract changes with the probability of the outcome. But bettors on these platforms can also sell contracts. So theoretically, if they\u2019ve timed the market right, they can profit even without the outcome they bet on happening. For example, on July 21, the day Biden dropped out, a Harris win was priced at 29 cents. A week later it was priced at 39 cents\u2014a large enough spread to make a sizable, and guaranteed, profit if one were to have bought low and sold high.<\/p>\n<p>Yet for all the truth-telling powers of the market claimed by prediction market boosters, they can still get tripped up: People make bad investments all the time.
