And that\u2019s before they start running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Unlike most bats, which largely avoid the ground, vampire bats are capable runners, using their folded wings to propel them forward. This helps them stealthily stalk livestock \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jmammal\/article\/96\/1\/54\/862973\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">and occasionally unsuspecting humans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey don\u2019t want to flutter down and drop right on the back of a cow,\u201d said Kenneth Welch, a biologist at the University of Toronto Scarborough, who studies vampire bats and other animals with specialized diets. \u201cInstead, they land a few feet away, silently approach the cow\u2019s leg and make a tiny, painless incision with the cow none the wiser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These pursuits of prey can be energy draining. And the palm-size bats\u2019 blood-based diet is lean on carbohydrates and fats, which most mammals rely on to generate energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Because vampire bats can\u2019t carbo-load, they seem to rely on the proteins in the blood they slurp up.
