{"id":122725,"date":"2024-11-06T13:38:19","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T06:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=122725"},"modified":"2024-11-06T13:38:19","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T06:38:19","slug":"malaysian-jailed-for-us-navy-corruption-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=122725","title":{"rendered":"Malaysian jailed for US Navy corruption scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A Malaysian businessman has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for his role in the US Navy&#8217;s biggest corruption scandal and for skipping a previous sentencing hearing. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Leonard Glenn Francis, known as &#8220;Fat Leonard&#8221;, pleaded guilty<!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b>in 2015 to bribing senior Navy officials with millions of dollars in cash, prostitutes, luxury travel and top-shelf liquor and cigars.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In exchange, Francis said he received classified information and was able to overcharge the Navy $35m (\u00a327m) for his company&#8217;s services to the 7th Fleet based in the Indo-Pacific.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He had been due for sentencing in 2022 but <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-62764226\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">he escaped in September that year<!-- --><\/a> by cutting off his ankle bracelet, and was recaptured within days.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The US Attorney&#8217;s Office said Tuesday&#8217;s sentence reflected admissions in his 2015 guilty plea, his &#8220;extensive cooperation with the government&#8221;, and his guilty plea earlier on Tuesday for failing to attend the original sentencing hearing.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The court also fined the 60-year-old $150,000 and ordered him to pay the US Navy $20m in restitution.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">His company, Singapore-based Glenn Defense Marine Asia, was also sentenced on Tuesday to five years probation and was fined $36m.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">US officials said the scandal had weakened public trust in some Navy leaders and its fallout will be long-felt. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Francis was arrested in California in 2013 and he pleaded guilty to bribery<!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b>and fraud charges<!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b>in 2015.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">After his escape in September, he was <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-62976844\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">recaptured days later in Venezuela<!-- --><\/a> while trying to get to Russia.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">His case came to be known as the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-60149145\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Fat Leonard scandal<!-- --><\/a> because of Francis&#8217; rotund frame at that time. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Francis was returned to California last December under a prisoner swap between the US and Venezuela that saw Washington release an ally of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in exchange for 10 American detainees.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Leonard Francis lined his pockets with taxpayer dollars while undermining the integrity of US Naval forces,&#8221; said US Attorney Tara McGrath in a statement. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The impact of his deceit and manipulation will be long felt, but justice has been served today,&#8221; McGrath said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The bribery and corruption that Francis had &#8220;fostered&#8221; within the US Navy over many years was &#8220;aggravated and egregious&#8221;, but under custody, he helped investigators uncover &#8220;unprecedented levels of corruption&#8221; in the establishment, the US Attorney&#8217;s Office said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Francis provided investigators with detailed information on hundreds of sailors, from petty officers to admirals.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cMr. Francis\u2019 sentencing brings closure to an expansive fraud scheme that he perpetrated against the US Navy with assistance from various Navy officials,&#8221;
